In recent years, agricultural extension activities in Long My district have had many positive changes, contributing significantly to the transfer of scientific and technical advances into agricultural production, thereby improving productivity, quality and economic efficiency for farmers.

The rice production model applying smart, environmentally responsible farming processes implemented by the Long My district and provincial agricultural extension sector in Vinh Thuan Dong commune has brought about many benefits.

Long My district is a locality that is often greatly affected by climate change in terms of drought and saltwater intrusion. In particular, the dry season from December of the previous year to May of the following year is characterized by drought and saltwater intrusion; and from June to November, there are floods causing inundation. Therefore, agricultural production of local people often encounters many difficulties. Therefore, in order to help local people produce agricultural products effectively, in recent times, the Long My district agricultural extension sector has implemented many effective production models associated with the selection of livestock and crops suitable for land conditions and meeting market consumption needs.

Mr. Lam Van Viet, Head of the Long My District Agricultural Extension Station, said: On the main crop of the district, rice (with nearly 17,700 hectares), the district agricultural extension sector has coordinated with the provincial agricultural extension sector to promote the transfer of many scientific and technical advances to help farmers produce effectively and in the direction of food safety and hygiene associated with environmental friendliness. Especially in the past 2 years, the district agricultural extension sector has focused on guiding people to produce high-quality rice according to the process of the Project of 1 million hectares of quality rice, low emissions associated with high green growth in the Mekong Delta, thereby contributing to increasing the value of rice grains and income for people.

Typically, at the Cuu Long Ogranic Medicinal Agricultural Cooperative, in Hamlet 3, Vinh Thuan Dong Commune, Long My District, in the Summer-Autumn rice crop being cultivated, the Cooperative was selected by the provincial and district agricultural extension sector to pilot a rice production model applying smart, environmentally responsible farming processes (MRV), with an area of 50.2 hectares.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Luan, Director of Cuu Long Ogranic Medicinal Agricultural Cooperative, informed: When participating in the model, farmers only sow and plant rice seeds with an average amount of 85kg/ha. During the production process, farmers apply the alternating wet and dry process, while making a commitment to be responsible to the environment by not burning fields, reducing fertilizer by 30% and minimizing the use of pesticides. In addition, farmers in the model are also supported with 50% of essential materials such as: rice seeds, fertilizers, straw rollers, small-capacity transplanters, seedling trays, pesticide spraying equipment, etc., thereby creating conditions for people to apply the emission-reducing farming process in a more synchronous and effective manner; at the same time, rice products when harvested are guaranteed to create conditions for members to feel secure in production.

Besides rice, Long My district's agricultural extension sector has successfully built 2 pineapple production models according to VietGAP standards in Vinh Vien A commune. In addition, it has built 2 soursop production models according to GlobalGAP standards, linked with businesses to guarantee product output for farmers; at the same time, it has built soursop production models according to the value chain from planting to processing products from soursop fruit, flowers, and leaves into tea, candy, wine, jam, etc.

In each pineapple and custard apple model, the Long My district agricultural extension sector supports farmers with seedlings, organic fertilizers, water-saving irrigation systems and training in specific farming techniques for each model and crop. In addition, taking advantage of support sources from the national target program, the district agricultural extension sector supports farmers with buffalo and cow breeds, and guides them to apply the buffalo and cow farming model according to the circular economic chain (raising buffalo and cows - raising earthworms - raising eels - raising fish - growing grass, growing vegetables ...); thereby helping farmers increase their income. Currently, in Long My district, there are more than 20 buffalo and cow farming development models following the circular economic chain.

Another noteworthy point in the transfer of science and technology and the replication of effective farming models is that the district agricultural extension sector coordinated with the provincial agricultural extension sector and local authorities and people to successfully implement the rice-shrimp rotation model in the land along alluvial plains, mixed garden land, and land for growing ineffective crops outside the salinity prevention dyke in Luong Nghia commune. When participating in the model, people are supported with shrimp seeds, soil improvement materials, model design costs, high-quality rice seeds, training, demonstrations, tours, etc., thereby helping people improve their knowledge about effective shrimp farming. Statistics show that if in 2021 the area implementing the shrimp-rice model was only 89 hectares, by this year the area has increased to 180 hectares.

Mr. Tran Van Thinh, in Hamlet 6, Luong Nghia Commune, confided: “My family has more than 2 hectares of land applying the shrimp-rice model for 2 years now. The efficiency of this model is 25-35 million/ha/year higher than monoculture rice production. After 2 years of farming and through the actual efficiency, I realized that this land has a lot of potential to develop the shrimp-rice farming model to adapt to climate change, especially to create additional high income for people during the months of saltwater intrusion”.

According to the assessment of the Long My district agricultural extension sector, the results of the implementation of the models show that when applying advanced techniques to production, it will help increase crop and livestock productivity by 10-20% compared to traditional methods, thereby creating an income increase of 15-30% for participating households. In general, agricultural extension models in Long My district are always replicated after implementation and organized for households to learn and follow after the model ends.

Mr. Le Hong Viet, Vice Chairman of Long My District People's Committee, said: Agricultural extension models implemented in the period of 2021-2025 in Long My district have been bringing about clear economic, technical and social efficiency. Although there are still some difficulties, with the right orientation and the support of authorities at all levels and people, we believe that agricultural extension work in the coming time will continue to be a lever to promote sustainable agricultural development for the locality.
