Việt NamViệt Nam23/11/2023

Started to be planted experimentally since 2006, but it was not until 2018 that many households in Cat Lai, Binh Nghia, Binh Luc communes (mainly in village 1, village 2) chose to grow the diamond chrysanthemum. The diamond chrysanthemum has beautiful flowers, long, hard petals, and a golden yellow (or pure white) color. It is popular in the market, and the price of the diamond chrysanthemum is 300-500 VND higher per flower, bringing high economic value, helping flower growers in Binh Nghia increase their income, gradually improving the quality of family life.

With the support of technical transfer from the Vegetable Research Institute, in 2006, Mr. Hoang Van Dai, Head of the Diamond Chrysanthemum Growing Cooperative in Binh Nghia Commune, began to plant and cultivate Diamond Chrysanthemum varieties. Mr. Hoang Van Dai said: Compared to other common types of chrysanthemums, Diamond Chrysanthemums are "difficult" flowers, requiring higher planting and care techniques. If planted and cared for incorrectly, the flowers will not be beautiful, and the plants will even die. Because the planting, care, and pest control techniques are more demanding and strict, Diamond Chrysanthemums bring higher income than other common types of chrysanthemums, and are very easy to sell on the market, but at first, many flower growers in Cat Lai did not choose to cultivate them.

Realizing that chrysanthemums are suitable for the local soil and weather conditions, bringing a much higher income than other crops, after 2006, in addition to Mr. Dai's family, a few households in Cat Lai also started growing chrysanthemums. In order to create favorable conditions for households that have grown and are wanting to grow chrysanthemums in the area to have the opportunity to connect and support each other in terms of science and technology, seedlings, and markets, etc., in December 2018, the Farmers' Association of Binh Nghia commune directed the establishment of a Cooperative Group for growing chrysanthemums in Cat Lai. The cooperative group consists of 29 members, with some growing from 1-2 sao of flowers per crop; some growing up to over one mau.

Ms. Tran Thi Tam, village 2, Cat Lai, grows chrysanthemums to prepare for the Lunar New Year market.

Ms. Tu Thi Thanh Mieu, Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Binh Nghia Commune, said: By participating in the cooperative, members are proactive, regularly meet, exchange, and share experiences on techniques for caring for and preventing pests and diseases for flowers; when needed, they are ready to support each other with seedlings, introduce consumption markets, etc. Thanks to that, over the years, members of the cooperative have maintained and developed the area of growing diamond chrysanthemums, contributing to improving economic efficiency per unit of cultivated area.

Since 2018, Ms. Tran Thi Tam's family, village 2, Cat Lai has started growing diamond chrysanthemums. It is known that before 2014, on an area of 4 sao of garden land and fertile land, Ms. Tam's family specialized in growing various vegetables. To increase income, since 2014, her family has switched to growing various types of chrysanthemums. Realizing that diamond chrysanthemums bring higher economic efficiency than regular chrysanthemums, in 2018, Ms. Tam's family started growing diamond chrysanthemums on an area of one sao. Ms. Tam shared: To grow diamond chrysanthemums, first of all, it is necessary to improve the soil well, fertilize with all kinds of fertilizers, and take care of pests and diseases properly. When planting, it is necessary to pay attention to ensuring the density and distance between plants according to the correct standards. The outstanding advantages of diamond chrysanthemums are hard stems; thick eyebrows; hard, long, shiny petals; large, beautiful flowers, and bright colors. Because of its popularity in the market, diamond daisies sell well, priced 300-500 VND/flower higher than other flowers, sometimes 500-1,000 VND/flower higher.

As the first person to grow chrysanthemums in the area, and also the person with the largest area of chrysanthemums, Mr. Hoang Van Dai, Head of the Cooperative Group for Growing Chrysanthemums in Binh Nghia Commune, is a person with a lot of experience in growing, caring for and propagating chrysanthemums. Currently, in addition to the area of over 6,000m2 of land specializing in growing chrysanthemums and chrysanthemum varieties of all kinds, Mr. Dai and his brother grow chrysanthemums on an acre of chrysanthemums. Mr. Dai shared: Chrysanthemums have two colors, yellow and white, suitable for weather with temperatures from 28 to 32 degrees. This is the ideal temperature for the plant to grow and develop well. Therefore, flower growers in Cat Lai only grow chrysanthemums in the fall, starting from August (lunar calendar), harvesting until the full moon of April (lunar calendar) is finished. 100 to 105 days is the time from planting to the day the chrysanthemums are ready to harvest. Understand the characteristics of the plant; With the skills and experience in planting, caring for, and preventing pests, many people who grow chrysanthemums calculate the planting time and choose the time when the plants are ready to harvest right on the occasion of Lunar New Year with the hope that the price of flowers will be higher, thereby increasing income.

Like many other crops, the price of chrysanthemums depends entirely on the free market price, sometimes high, sometimes low. However, on average, one sao of chrysanthemums brings in an income of 30 - 35 million VND/crop, much higher than other crops. In particular, thanks to being quick and proactive in grasping market demand, chrysanthemum growers produce flowers according to buyers' needs. The market favors flowers with one really big, beautiful flower; growers will take care of the plants according to techniques so that the plants only have one really big, beautiful flower. The market favors flowers with two or three buds, growers will take care of the plants according to techniques so that the plants have more buds around them...

Not only that, the cooperative model also creates cohesion among members; everyone is willing to support and help each other in the production and consumption process to increase the value of the cultivated land area.

In the coming time, along with maintaining and developing the diamond chrysanthemum growing model, the Farmers' Association of Binh Nghia commune will continue to propagate and mobilize members to boldly and proactively apply scientific advances, introduce plant varieties with high economic value, suitable for the local climate and soil quality into production, contributing to effectively implementing criteria and targets on income, production organization and rural economic development in building advanced new rural areas in the locality.
