GET TO CHAT WITH ONE OF VIETNAM'S MOST FAMOUS FORMER ATHLETES

One of the highlights of the important events taking place throughout May 28th is the opening of a free swimming class for children in Binh Chanh District (Ho Chi Minh City). Vietnamese swimming legend Nguyen Thi Anh Vien will participate in the program, hoping to inspire and spread a passion for swimming so that more children will learn to swim, contributing to the prevention of drowning in Vietnam .

The children will have the opportunity to take souvenir photos and chat with former swimmer Ánh Viên.

Besides sharing topical stories such as the benefits of learning to swim for children, whether learning to swim is difficult, and how to learn to swim well, Anh Vien also directly instructed 100 children in Binh Chanh District on swimming techniques. The organizers stated: "According to the plan, after her speech, Anh Vien, along with many other guests, will present a symbolic plaque with 100 life vests to the children. The image of Anh Vien demonstrating warm-up exercises and swimming techniques right in the classroom will create a positive effect, because until now, the children have almost never had the opportunity to meet a renowned athlete like Anh Vien in person. At this program, the children will also have the chance to take souvenir photos, chat with Anh Vien, and listen to her instructions on swimming movements."

In an interview with Thanh Nien Newspaper, Mr. Le Hai Long, Member of the Standing Committee of the Central Youth Union, Head of the Central Youth Union's Children's Affairs Department, and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Central Children's Council, emphasized that through the free swimming lessons for children, with the support of Anh Vien, the Central Children's Council hopes that not only children but also parents, families, and society as a whole will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of learning and teaching to swim. The Central Children's Council also hopes that children will be equipped with safety skills when participating in swimming activities and that drowning accidents among children during the summer will be minimized, so that they can have a truly joyful, safe, and enriching summer.

The sports sector will actively coordinate with other ministries and departments.

A sports official emphasized: "In recent times, the Government, the Prime Minister , and the National Committee for Children have issued numerous directives on preventing child drowning. With the active participation of ministries, localities, families, and communities in this effort, the number of child deaths due to drowning has decreased year by year. However, recently, drowning incidents causing fatalities among children are still frequent and remain high in some localities. To continue effectively implementing this work and ensuring the safety of children, especially during the upcoming summer, rainy season, and storm season, agencies, including the sports sector, will actively coordinate with other ministries and agencies to ensure a truly safe summer for children. The role of the media in preventing drowning cannot be denied. Thanh Nien Newspaper, along with other media outlets, has actively promoted communication and information dissemination to raise awareness and responsibility among families and communities regarding the prevention of child drowning."

Sharing her thoughts on accepting the invitation to participate in the free swimming lessons and exchange program for children organized by the Central Youth Union Council, Anh Vien said: "When I was still competing, every time I read about cases of children drowning in the news, I couldn't sleep. Therefore, now I try to arrange my time to ensure I balance my studies (I am in my final year of the Sports Training Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Sports and Physical Education - PV) with teaching and guiding swimming both in person and online, and I am ready to participate in programs promoting drowning prevention for children."

POSITIVE FEEDBACK

The series of articles on the urgent need to prevent drowning, published by Thanh Nien newspaper in recent days, has received many positive responses from readers. Former Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of District 1 (Ho Chi Minh City), Doan Ngoc Hai, shared: "On average, 2,000 children drown in our country each year. Thousands of families suffer loss and grief. Swimming star Anh Vien has supported a meaningful and practical program that we need to commend and replicate. A sports star whose thoughts and actions resonate with people."

Many readers of Thanh Nien Newspaper also believe that society needs stars like Anh Vien to spread the love of swimming widely and thereby receive more attention to drowning prevention programs. Of course, for drowning prevention efforts in Vietnam to be truly successful and effective, and for the number of drownings among the general population and children in particular to decrease, it requires the synchronized and decisive implementation of tasks and solutions for drowning prevention among children, in accordance with the Prime Minister's directive in Official Dispatch No. 398/CĐ-TTg dated May 2, 2022.
