"My journey with the Cambodian football development project that started in 2018 has come to an end. I could not finish my last tournament leading the Cambodian team with a satisfactory result, but I want to use this disappointment as motivation for the next journey.
The Cambodian players will know what they need to do for their careers, so I have high hopes for their bright future. Thank you to everyone who has supported us for the past 5 years. I will continue my journey," Coach Keisuke Honda shared after the Cambodian U.22 team failed to achieve the goal of reaching the semi-finals of the men's football event at the 32nd SEA Games.
Coach Keisuke Honda
Besides working and improving the quality of Cambodian football, Coach Keisuke Honda is also the person who directly searched for and trained the current generation of Cambodian U.22 players over the past 2 years.
This Japanese coach and famous player hopes to help Cambodian football win a football medal for the first time in history at the regional sports festival. Coach Keisuke Honda even did not hide his ambition to take U.22 Cambodia straight to the final match of men's football at the 32nd SEA Games.
Cambodia U.22 players disappointed
However, as hosts, U.22 Cambodia was drawn into a very easy group A with U.22 Indonesia as a candidate for the semi-finals. After the opening match, U.22 Cambodia missed a last-minute victory against U.22 Philippines (1-1 draw), before losing to their direct opponent U.22 Myanmar 0-2, losing the right to decide for a place in the semi-finals.
In the final match against U.22 Indonesia on the evening of May 10, U.22 Cambodia tried their best but still lost 1-2 and ended their dream of winning a medal right at home. Coach Keisuke Honda also said goodbye to Cambodian football as committed at the beginning of the year, after finishing his job leading the national team after the AFF Cup. Cambodian football will now enter a new journey with Argentine coach Felix Dalmas.
