Coach Shin Tae-yong has requested the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) to intervene so that two stars, Justin Hubner and Ivar Jenner, can be included in the squad for the 2024 AFF Cup. The duo are on the Indonesian national team's registration list, but their respective clubs are not allowing them to play.
According to Bola, the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) did not influence or negotiate to persuade the club to release the player. This decision was recently announced by PSSI President, billionaire Erick Thohir.
"From the beginning, I didn't force all players to participate in the AFF Cup 2024. Our priority is to develop domestic players as well," said the head of Indonesia's football federation.
The Indonesian Football Association rejected the demands of coach Shin Tae-yong.
The billionaire added: "Players also get tired and are at risk of injury. They have careers at their clubs. If they want to focus on their current team, we have to respect that. There's no way we can force them to return. That's impossible. Players aren't paid by their national teams."
Justin Hubner currently plays for Wolverhampton's reserve team, a Premier League club. Ivar Jenner is on the books of Jong Utrecht (Netherlands). Both of these Dutch-born players are key members of the Indonesian national team in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The AFF Cup (ASEAN Cup) takes place outside of FIFA's official international match calendar, therefore clubs have the right to keep players without releasing them to the national team. A few days ago, after the draw against Laos, coach Shin Tae-yong called on the Indonesian Football Federation and the media to put pressure on them to recall Justin Hubner and Ivar Jenner for the 2024 AFF Cup.
"We want to call up Ivar Jenner and the Indonesian Football Federation is still trying. We want you reporters to write articles so that Jenner can be immediately called up to the Indonesian national team," coach Shin Tae-yong said after Indonesia's draw with Laos on the evening of December 12th at Manahan Stadium (Surakarta, Indonesia).
After three matches, the Indonesian team has only earned 4 points (winning against Myanmar 1-0, drawing with Laos 3-3, and losing to Vietnam 0-1). The team from the archipelago only has one match left against the Philippines.
