On May 15, news from Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital ( Can Tho City) said that the hospital's doctors had just successfully treated a rare case of a fish bone in the airway.

The patient, Mr. TVS (65 years old, residing in Thoi Lai District, Can Tho City), was previously hospitalized with a persistent cough, difficulty breathing, chest pain, and wheezing. According to the patient's family, Mr. S. had previously choked after eating sour soup cooked with fish, leading to coughing and thought it was a cough caused by choking on food.

Bronchoscopy showed a fish bone fragment longer than 6 cm.

However, Mr. S.'s cough did not improve. After a clinical examination and a chest CT scan, doctors discovered a blurred image in the right lung of patient S., suspecting pneumonia caused by a foreign body.

Bronchoscopy results showed a sharp fish bone piece, more than 6 cm long, deeply embedded in the lower lobe bronchus of the right lung. The foreign object caused swelling, partially blocked the airway, and was surrounded by a lot of phlegm and food residue.

The team performed a flexible bronchoscopy for nearly 60 minutes to remove the foreign object. After the foreign object was successfully removed, the patient was monitored for 24 hours and discharged in stable health condition, with no complications recorded.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Thai, General Department, Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital, foreign bodies in the airways are not uncommon emergency situations, but if not detected and treated promptly, they can lead to pneumonia, severe infections or even be life-threatening if the foreign body causes airway obstruction.

Doctors also recommend that people should be careful when eating and drinking to avoid choking or choking on foreign objects; if there are signs of prolonged coughing, wheezing, chest pain or difficulty breathing after eating, they should immediately go to a medical facility for timely examination; absolutely do not attempt to remove foreign objects from the airway if you suspect choking on bones or food because it can cause serious damage and endanger life.
