Increase the insurance amount compared to the original estimate
Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online , the life insurance company AIA (Vietnam) said it had just completed the necessary procedures this week to pay insurance benefits of more than 2.3 billion VND to the families of two customers in Quang Ninh and Lao Cai .
These customers were victims of the Green Bay 58 ship capsize in Ha Long Bay, which took place in mid-July 2025. Thus, the actual payment amount is higher than the initial estimate of 50 million VND.
Previously, as soon as information about the ship capsize was received, the company's professional departments closely coordinated with local authorities and proactively searched for information about customers who unfortunately had an accident and passed away.
"We understand that no amount of financial support can completely ease the pain of loss, and we hope that this timely support will provide some motivation for the relatives of the unfortunate passengers in the shipwreck to quickly overcome this difficult period and gradually stabilize their lives," said a representative of AIA Vietnam.
At Manulife Vietnam, the initial estimate was about 3 billion VND, but in reality, it was more than 6 billion VND for three customers who were victims of the accident. Immediately after the relatives took care of the funeral for the deceased, the company also rushed to complete the insurance compensation procedures.
In this case, Generali Insurance Company shared that it immediately sent staff to proactively contact and visit customers and relatives. The total amount of payment for the two victims was 6.25 billion VND, higher than the initial 4.2 billion VND.
In the life insurance sector, many other businesses also pay large amounts of money such as: Bao Viet, Dai-ichi, Prudential also pay insurance with appropriate amounts according to previously signed contracts.
In the non-life sector, the total expected compensation is about 4.2 billion VND, including: 1.2 billion VND for shipowner civil liability insurance and crew accident insurance (Bao Long), 2 billion VND for passenger accident insurance (Bao Viet co-insured with PTI, MIC, BSH) and 1 billion VND for credit insurance (AAA).
Shorten procedures and payment time
In total, both life and non-life insurance payments are estimated to be more than VND21 billion. For victims who do not survive, their relatives will be the beneficiaries, to help them have more support to continue their lives.
Many related insurance companies said that, according to normal procedures, after the insured person passes away, relatives must submit the death certificate and related documents for the company to review before making a payment decision.
However, in this case, the companies proactively recorded information, verified benefits and decided to pay in advance, instead of waiting for the entire file to be completed. After that, relatives only need to supplement the missing documents according to regulations to receive insurance money, ensuring benefits.
The Green Bay 58 ship capsized on the evening of July 19. As of July 30, many insurance companies have completed procedures and paid compensation to the victims. The Insurance Supervision and Management Department (Ministry of Finance) has also assigned the Vietnam Insurance Association to coordinate the implementation of humanitarian assistance according to regulations.
On the afternoon of July 19, the ship Vinh Xanh 58 capsized in Ha Long Bay due to a storm. Authorities have just found the body of the last victim of this ship capsize on July 26. Thus, after the accident, 39 bodies have been found and handed over to their families, 10 people were lucky to survive.
