The family of the legendary Franz Beckenbauer confirmed the news to DPA news agency early this morning, January 9 (Vietnam time). "It is with great sadness that we announce that our husband and father, Franz Beckenbauer, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, surrounded by his family," the family said in a statement.
Franz Beckenbauer is one of the greatest players in world football.
Franz Beckenbauer was born on September 11, 1945 in Munich and started playing football at the age of 13. Franz Beckenbauer is widely regarded as one of the greatest players ever to play world football. Nicknamed "Der Kaiser", which means "The Emperor" in German, he is considered one of the greatest legends of German football. Franz Beckenbauer started his career as a midfielder, but made his name as a centre-back. He was perhaps one of the first players in the world to introduce the concept of a ball-playing defender, who could defend while also carrying the ball forward to support the attack.
At the West German national team level, Franz Beckenbauer won the 1974 World Cup and was runner-up in the 1966 World Cup. He is also the only player to win the European Golden Ball while playing for the national team. Along with Didier Deschamps (France) and Mario Zagallo (Brazil), Franz Beckenbauer is one of three people to have won the World Cup as both a player and a coach.
Not only is "Der Kaiser" a good player, he is also very successful as a coach.
At club level, Franz Beckenbauer played mostly for FC Bayern, scoring 74 goals in 582 games and winning four German championships (1969, 1972, 1973, 1974) and four DFB Cups (1966, 1967, 1969, 1971). Beckenbauer also enjoyed great international success with FC Bayern, winning three Euro Champions Cups, one Euro Cup Winners' Cup and one Club World Cup.
During his coaching career, Franz Beckenbauer led the German national team to win the 1990 World Cup, led Bayern Munich to win the Bundesliga in 1993/1994 and the UEFA Cup in 1995/1996. Besides his great achievements at Bayern Munich, Franz Beckenbauer played for Hamburger SV and New York Cosmos as a player. He also worked as the Technical Director of Marseille in the 1990/1991 season and won the Ligue 1 championship with the team.
