Learning to swim not only helps children improve their health and equip them with necessary life skills to prevent drowning accidents, but also gives them a useful summer.
THE NECESSITY OF LEARNING CHILDREN TO SWIM
Early in the morning, the swimming pool area at Dong Thap Province Sports Training and Competition Center is filled with the laughter of dozens of children practicing swimming. Small groups are instructed by coaches on freestyle and breaststroke techniques... Or many children are just getting used to the water, waving their arms and legs to practice floating in the water. To help her children relax and have fun, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hien (in Dao Thanh ward) said: "My daughter just finished 4th grade, it's summer vacation time so I let her learn to swim to relax and exercise to stay healthy. She is very excited about swimming lessons."

Most children are very excited to swim in cool water, laugh with friends, reduce study pressure and stay away from electronic devices - something that many parents always want for their children. Rhythmic movements with each swimming movement will help children release negative energy, regulate their psychology after months of stressful study.
Nguyen Thanh Dat (7 years old) shared: “At first, I was very afraid of water. When I went to the swimming pool, I just stood at the edge of the pool. But after going to the swimming pool a few times, I saw my friends swimming, so I tried to learn to swim too. I like the feeling of diving into the water, it's cool and comfortable, so I really like it.” Dat's mother, Le Thi Thanh Thuy, said: “My son was shy, but when he went to swimming lessons, he became more confident, always showing off that he could swim 20 meters and learned new swimming styles.”
Ms. Nguyen Tran Mai Anh (in Trung An ward) said that her family decided to register her 6-year-old son to learn swimming at the Dong Thap Province Sports Training and Competition Center, with the same cost as other swimming facilities, but the quality of swimming lessons here is truly outstanding. The swimming pool at the center is modern, meets national standards, has a team of professional swimming teachers and coaches, and has a lifeguard force right at the pool. This makes her family very secure, moreover, this is a very useful and meaningful extracurricular playground to help her child practice physical exercise, have good health and most importantly, know how to swim, prevent drowning accidents.
Mr. Le Phuoc Hai, swimming teacher at the Swimming Pool - Dong Thap Province Sports Training and Competition Center, said: “This summer, the number of children registered by their parents to learn to swim has increased compared to previous years. I am currently teaching swimming lessons to more than 100 children/day at the swimming pool. Every day, the children swim from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (each swimming session lasts about 1 hour). Coming to the swimming class, the children are supported by teachers to get used to the water environment, and are instructed in basic swimming skills such as: freestyle swimming, breaststroke swimming, self-floating skills in water and drowning prevention. At first, many children had difficulties because they did not know how to swim and were afraid of water. However, over time, all the children gradually became excited about swimming. On average, after two weeks of swimming lessons, the children will know how to swim.”
According to teacher Le Phuoc Hai, when learning to swim, children will have fun with friends and make many new friends. The advantage of teaching swimming is that children learn very quickly and are active, so they learn to swim easily. For some children who are afraid of water, swimming teachers often talk to them, explain to them, so that they forget their fear and gradually get used to the water.
CONTRIBUTE TO DROWNING PREVENTION
In recent years, departments, branches, and localities in the former Tien Giang province (now Dong Thap province) have focused on promoting propaganda and mobilizing people of all walks of life and students to participate in swimming practice and drowning prevention. Thereby, raising public awareness of the role, significance, and effects of swimming practice, and equipping them with skills to prevent drowning accidents in daily life.

Localities, units and enterprises have also increased investment and upgraded facilities and equipment for swimming training; organized swimming classes, drowning prevention and sports classes for children during the summer. At the same time, implemented many solutions to promote the mass movement of swimming training, drowning prevention and control; organized many swimming classes, thereby minimizing drowning accidents and injuries in children.
Currently, many schools have invested in building swimming pools, arranging teachers and swimming instructors, attracting many students to practice this sport. Mr. Le Quoc Buot, a swimming teacher at Nguyen Dinh Chieu High School, My Tho Ward, Dong Thap Province, said: "Swimming lessons at schools are implemented according to the Safe Swimming Education Program for Students of the Ministry of Education and Training. Students are equipped with basic knowledge on land, practical knowledge in water; first aid skills and knowledge of water safety, how to handle dangerous situations when swimming."
Swimming is not only a sport that helps children have fun in the summer, but also one of the most important life skills for children, especially in the context of drowning accidents that are still a concern for the whole society. Each swimming stroke that children learn is a step of physical, mental and cognitive maturity. In order for children to have a useful, safe and healthy summer, attention from family, school, community and government is needed.
MEASURES TO PREVENT DROWNING IN CHILDREN
In recent years, although local authorities and socio-political organizations have paid attention to organizing propaganda in many forms to prevent and combat child drowning. However, due to many objective reasons as well as the education and training of life skills for children is still too formal and not practical, so drowning accidents still occur.
From the tragic incidents, there are many causes leading to drowning accidents in children, but most of them are still due to the negligence and subjectivity of parents, not closely supervising children or lack of caretakers, letting children roam freely. In addition, with natural conditions such as rivers, ponds, lakes... are unsafe environments for young children. Even water containers in the family such as jars, water tanks... without lids are also dangerous for young children. Just a few seconds of adult negligence, children can fall into ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, wells... and can suffocate and drown in a very short time. This is also a potential danger causing drowning accidents in children.
According to the report of the health sector of our country, on average, there are cases of children drowning every day. This situation occurs in most localities in the country, including Dong Thap province. Even during this summer vacation, if students are not regularly educated and reminded about safety, unfortunate accidents are likely to happen to them. Therefore, each of us needs to have knowledge about preventing and combating drowning accidents. Especially adults and parents should always raise awareness to propagate, remind and manage their children.
Accordingly, some ways to prevent drowning in children that need attention are to stay away from dangerous water areas such as: Do not invite each other to go swimming in ponds, lakes, rivers, streams... when you do not know how to swim. Do not go or play near places with ponds, lakes, rivers, streams or water tanks, sewers, wells... without covers. Deep ponds are dangerous... children need to stay away. Always monitor your child when they go into the water or play near ponds, lakes, bathtubs... Only let children swim in areas with lifeguards. If your home has a swimming pool, install a fence around the pool, do not let your child swim alone. Children should learn to swim (children over 4 years old) in water safety classes. Adults and children should always wear life jackets when going boating. Note that when children go to the beach or swimming pool, they must have a safety buoy; do not let children swim alone out of sight of adults...
