BBK - Having gone through the war with many injuries and illnesses, many veterans still strive to rise up, shine in everyday life, actively contribute to the development of their family's economy and the construction of their homeland.

Despite his old age, veteran Mac Luan Tien still works diligently.

This year, 76 years old, veteran Mac Luan Tien in Ban Pieng village, Luc Binh commune (Bach Thong) is still diligently working by the fish pond, on the forest hills.

Many times, seeing that he was old, had limited health, and had been exposed to toxic chemicals while participating in the resistance war... his children and grandchildren advised him to rest, but he said: "As a soldier of Uncle Ho, I never stop working, building a family life and contributing to my homeland and country."

Veteran Mac Luan Tien shares about the responsibility of veterans in economic development and homeland building.

Mr. Tien recounted: “In 1968, following the call of the Party, I volunteered to join the army and fight in the Southeast. The country was at peace , and I served in the Public Security sector. In 1985, due to the after-effects of Agent Orange poisoning, I applied for 61% disability leave. At that time, my family had many children and was extremely poor, having to work hard to make ends meet. I thought I was not afraid of bombs and bullets, so why would I falter in the face of poverty? The willpower and bravery of a soldier helped me overcome difficulties, build a career, and raise my children to adulthood like today.”

In Ban Pieng, Mr. Tien is known not only as a veteran who knows how to do business but also as a person who has made positive contributions to the development of his hometown. The nearly 3km inner-village road was concreted, 02 inner-field canals were built thanks to Mr. Tien's efforts in mobilizing people to contribute labor and donate land when he was still the Party cell secretary. Mr. Tien's family also volunteered to donate 1,000m2 to build roads. In 2017, at the Conference of Meritorious People, Mr. Tien was honored to receive a Certificate of Merit from the Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs .

Mr. Nguyen Duc Tan, Chairman of the Association of War Veterans of Bach Thong district, evaluated the contributions of War Veterans' Association members to their homeland.

Tourism has now become a profession that brings in a good income for the Tay people living along Ba Be Lake. But few people know that one of the people who laid the foundation for community tourism here is a 4/4 level disabled veteran, Mr. Ngon Van Toan, in Pac Ngoi village, Nam Mau commune.

In mid-1967, after finishing his training period, Mr. Toan marched into the Central Highlands battlefield with the mission of cutting roads and bridges with his comrades to block the enemy's supply of food, guns and ammunition. During his time in combat, he was wounded twice in the leg and neck, and the pressure of bombs and mines affected his eardrums.

When peace was restored, Mr. Toan continued to serve in the Army until 1989 when he retired. Returning to normal life by Ba Be Lake, one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in the world, and regularly interacting with tourists, the former soldier decided to renovate his house into a homestay. Mr. Toan's initiative was a support for the villagers and neighboring villages to promote community tourism.

Mr. Ngon Van Toan (white shirt) welcomes foreign tourists to the motel.

Mr. Toan's family currently has 12 rooms that can accommodate 18-20 guests, and 2 motorboats that serve visitors to tourist attractions at Ba Be Lake. In addition, he has also invested in bicycles for visitors to ride around the lake and visit Hua Ma Cave. With many types of services, his family welcomes on average over 800 domestic and foreign visitors each year to eat, stay and visit, excluding expenses, earning from 250-300 million VND. Mr. Toan is an example of a "disabled but not useless" war invalid in Nam Mau commune, admired by many people.

Mr. Trieu Van Dam, Khuoi Luom village, Yen Duong commune, got rich from fragrant green squash.

Mr. Trieu Van Dam in Khuoi Luom village, Yen Duong commune, Ba Be district, participated in the fight against the Americans in the Southern battlefield and then in the war to protect the Southwest border. He was later discharged with a 60% disability rate and the after-effects of Agent Orange.

As a person who did not accept poverty and wanted to build his homeland, in 2016, Mr. Trieu Van Dam brought fragrant green squash to grow. At that time, this plant was not yet popular with the people and they were skeptical. With the initial successful experiments, the green squash field brought an income 3 times higher than rice cultivation, helping people feel secure in expanding the area. Thanks to that, the life of his family and the villagers has changed a lot. The spacious house along Provincial Road 258 of Mr. Dam's family is also partly thanks to the income from more than 2,000 square meters of squash fields. The veteran's contribution to the village makes the image of Uncle Ho's soldier shine even brighter.

Although the wounds of war still linger, the wounded and sick soldiers still remember the teachings of President Ho Chi Minh: "Wounded soldiers are disabled but not useless". Day by day, they strive to overcome difficulties to develop the economy, enrich themselves and contribute to local social work, they deserve to be shining examples for veteran members and the people to learn and follow./.
