According to RT , the UN Security Council passed the resolution in the context of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan (which began on March 10 and ends on April 9). The resolution was approved by 14 out of 15 members of the Council, while the US abstained.
The resolution also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of hostages, stressing the “urgent need to expand the flow of aid” into Gaza.

Speaking after the vote, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield blamed Hamas for delaying the adoption of the ceasefire.
“We disagree with everything in the resolution. Some important edits were left out, including our request to add a condemnation of Hamas,” she clarified the reason behind the US abstention.
Previously, the US vetoed three Security Council resolutions on Gaza and abstained in two similar resolutions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened to cancel a planned visit to Washington if the US does not veto a proposal calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Russia had tried to amend the text of an earlier draft version, which called for a "permanent" ceasefire, but the effort failed.
Reacting immediately after the vote, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the resolution was long-awaited and had to be implemented, otherwise it would be “unforgivable”.
According to an official AFP tally based on Israeli figures, the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 killed about 1,160 people, mostly civilians.
Meanwhile, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip, the subsequent Israeli military campaign against Hamas left at least 32,142 people in Gaza - mostly women and children - dead.
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said $90 billion is needed to rebuild Gaza following damage from the armed conflict between Israel and Hamas.
