Attending and chairing the workshop were Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan - Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army; Major General Nguyen Hoang Nhien - Director of the Institute of Military History; Major General Hua Van Tuong - Deputy Commander of Military Region 5; Colonel Le Thanh Bai - Deputy Director of the Institute of Military History; Colonel Nguyen Van Sau - Deputy Director of the Institute of Military History.

On the side of Quang Nam province, there were comrade Vo Xuan Ca - Member of the Standing Committee, Head of the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda Department; Standing member of Dai Loc District Party Committee, Provincial Political School.

The report presented at the conference stated: Promoting the victory of the Summer Campaign of 1974, the Regional Party Committee and the Military Region 5 Command advocated attacking and destroying a number of stronghold clusters and district sub-regions, breaking through each part of the enemy's basic defense system in the border and plain areas, completing the mountainous base area north of Region 5, supporting the grassroots armed forces and the masses to organize attacks and uprisings to break the enemy's control system in the rural plains.

In Quang Nam and Quang Da, they focused on attacking the enemy in three battle zones: Nong Son - Trung Phuoc, West Que Son (Quang Nam), and Thuong Duc (Quang Da). According to the plan, on the night of July 17, 1974, Division 2 opened fire to attack Nong Son - Trung Phuoc. By 5:30 p.m. on July 18, our troops had completely controlled Nong Son - Trung Phuoc. Then, on the morning of July 29, 1974, Division 304 opened fire to attack Thuong Duc.

After 10 days of fierce fighting, on the morning of August 7, 1974, the “steel door” was opened wide, and the Thuong Duc base completely collapsed. The enemy’s subsequent counterattacks to retake Thuong Duc were all defeated by us.

Authorized by the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, speaking at the workshop, Head of the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda Department Vo Xuan Ca highlighted the contributions of the Party Committee, army and people of Quang Nam and Quang Da Special Zone in coordinating to serve the campaign. Especially the work of opening roads, transporting food and weapons and evacuating people from enemy areas to their old villages and to the liberated areas.

The presentations at the conference all affirmed that the Nong Son - Thuong Duc Victory, especially the Thuong Duc Victory, had extremely important historical significance and a turning point, creating momentum for the Da Nang liberation campaign to move towards the 1975 Spring General Offensive and Uprising, liberating the entire South.

As former Chairman of the State Council, former Secretary of Zone 5 Party Committee Vo Chi Cong affirmed: “The victory in Thuong Duc not only cut off the steel door protecting the outer perimeter of Da Nang but also had important strategic significance at this time - it was a measure of the comparison between our armed forces and the puppet main force.

From that reality, it contributed to the Politburo and the Central Military Commission having new assessments, proposing correct and decisive policies in the strategy of the General Offensive and Uprising in the historic Spring of 1975.
