Seminar on the model "Sustainable corn cultivation on sloping land"

Attending the event were leaders of the Institute of Soil and Fertilizer; representatives of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, the Center for Agricultural Techniques, Bac Giang Agricultural Technical Materials Joint Stock Company and nearly 300 farmers of Chieng Sai commune.

Representative of Syngenta Vietnam Co., Ltd. introduced Syngenta solution with the model "Sustainable corn cultivation on sloping land".

Syngenta Vietnam Co., Ltd. has implemented a pilot model of "Sustainable corn cultivation on sloping land" in Chieng Sai commune. The model has a scale of 2.6 hectares, applying Syngenta solutions (a comprehensive set of agricultural products and technologies) to test planting NK6253 corn variety combined with guinea grass strips. The corn variety has the characteristics of a hard stem and fibrous roots, suitable for sloping terrain. When planted in combination with guinea grass strips with deep fibrous roots and good drought resistance, it brings dual benefits, both helping to protect the soil against erosion and providing a source of green food for livestock.

Delegates visited the actual model of growing corn variety NK6253 combined with guinea grass.

The model is arranged to cultivate 3 formulas, including: Formula 1, planting 0.8 ha, without grass strips, caring according to the process and practices of local farmers; Formula 2, planting 0.8 ha with anti-erosion grass strips, caring according to the process and practices of farmers; Formula 3, planting 1 ha, with anti-erosion grass strips, covering the soil and caring for corn according to Syngenta's process. After more than two years of implementation, the formula applying Syngenta solution achieved the highest yield, with 6.62 tons/ha, 46.1% higher than the formula cultivating according to traditional practices of farmers.

The combination of corn cultivation and grass strips brings outstanding efficiency. Grass strips help retain soil and improve soil, act as an effective barrier, reduce surface runoff kinetic energy, thereby stabilizing the cultivated soil layer, limiting fertilizer runoff and increasing soil moisture retention. In particular, grass strips provide 20-30 tons of grass/ha/year, as a source of green food for large livestock.

At the workshop, delegates discussed and shared practical experiences of farmers who have successfully implemented the model; solutions related to planting and caring for NK6253 corn, how to care for grass strips after harvest, optimal fertilization process according to Syngenta solutions... providing practical and in-depth knowledge to people.
