In late 2022, the Japanese automaker announced that it was developing a hydrogen fuel cell version of the CR-V. After nearly a year, it seems that this plan is gradually being completed when Honda recently conducted testing in the US and Japan.
Specifically, the TW MC account shared on the social network X (the new name of Twitter) a video showing a Honda the size of a CR-V in a parking lot in Japan. Not long ago, a similar car also appeared on the streets of America but with a more elaborate camouflage.
The front end is designed differently from the current version, with large air vents located at the two corners, while the grille is divided into two parts, with the upper half just as thin as the headlights.
The rear of the car is also a bit different, notably the absence of an exhaust pipe. Additionally, the word “hydrogen” is sprayed all over the body panels, so it’s almost certain that this is a fuel cell version.
It is known that the Honda CR-V hydrogen will not only run on hydrogen. Honda affirms that this new fuel cell vehicle can also be plugged in to charge the battery like a traditional pure electric car.
There is currently no information on the battery size or the vehicle's operating range.
The hydrogen fuel cell engine system was jointly developed by Honda and General Motors. According to the Japanese automaker, the new technology costs only one-third and is twice as durable as the type used in the 2019 Honda Clarity.
Honda will launch the CR-V fuel cell model in 2024, with Japan and North America expected to be the first two markets to sell this version.
