(TN&MT) - On the afternoon of January 8, 2025, the Government Office held a regular Government press conference for December 2024, chaired by Minister, Head of the Government Office Tran Van Son, and Government Spokesperson.
This is the first press conference of the Government in the new year 2025, taking place right before the Lunar New Year of At Ty. Attending the press conference were leaders representing ministries, branches and many reporters and editors from news agencies and newspapers.
At the beginning of the press conference, Minister Tran Van Son shared about the exciting atmosphere of the first days of 2025, especially in the context of this year's important significance, marking the acceleration and breakthrough period of the 5-year plan 2021-2025. On the same morning, the Government held an online conference with localities to summarize the work in 2024 and deploy tasks for 2025. The conference was attended by leaders of the Party, State, National Assembly , along with ministries, branches, localities, mass organizations, associations and enterprises. The conference discussed the results achieved in the past year, and proposed solutions to implement the tasks in 2025.
In particular, General Secretary To Lam delivered an important speech, providing strategic directions for the Government and all levels and sectors in 2025. According to the General Secretary, in 2024, despite many difficulties and challenges, under the leadership of the Central Executive Committee, the synchronous coordination between the National Assembly and political agencies, as well as the participation of the business community and the people, the Government has directed and managed resolutely, scientifically and flexibly. Thanks to that, the socio-economy has strongly recovered and achieved many remarkable results, exceeding all set goals.
The economy recovered positively, exceeding the target.
According to the report at the press conference, the economic situation in 2024 has had a strong recovery. GDP growth is estimated at 7.09%, among the countries with high growth rates in the world. Major economic sectors, including agriculture, forestry, fishery, industry and services, all maintained positive growth momentum. Total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue in 2024 increased by 9% over the previous year.
The macro economy remains stable, major balances are secured, and inflation is controlled at 2.71%, lower than the general CPI. Despite price adjustments for some services and salary increases from July 2024, the economy remains stable and growing well.
A big bright spot in 2024 is import-export activities. Total import-export turnover reached 786.29 billion USD, up 15.4% over the previous year, with a trade surplus of 24.77 billion USD. Tourism also had a strong recovery, reaching 17.6 million international visitors, up 39.5% over 2023.
The report also said that the total state budget revenue in 2024 is estimated to reach more than VND 2.03 trillion, up 19.8% compared to the estimate and 16.2% compared to 2023. Along with that, public debt, government debt and budget deficit are all much lower than the targets approved by the National Assembly.
Regarding investment, total social investment capital reached more than VND 3.69 million billion, up 7.5% compared to 2023. Notably, realized FDI capital reached a record level of 25.35 billion USD, up 9.4% compared to 2023, marking the highest level since 2020.
Promote infrastructure, develop businesses
Infrastructure development also recorded many significant steps forward in the past year. The transportation and electricity systems were heavily invested in, with the commissioning of an additional 109 km of highway, bringing the total length to more than 2,021 km. Many key electricity projects were also completed on schedule, creating a solid foundation for future economic development.
Regarding business development, in 2024, more than 233,000 businesses will enter and re-enter the market, far exceeding the number of businesses withdrawing from the market. The number of businesses returning to operation will reach an all-time high of over 76,000 businesses.
The Government has also proactively improved institutions, submitting 31 Laws and 42 Resolutions to the National Assembly for approval, and at the same time implementing a series of online conferences and trainings to ensure that laws are put into practice.
Key tasks in 2025: Breakthrough growth, macroeconomic stability
Also at the press conference, Minister and Head of the Government Office Tran Van Son informed the news agencies and press about the content that Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that 2025 will be the last year of the 5-year plan 2021-2025 and will be a year with many important events for the country. The Government will continue to implement the motto of action: "Discipline, responsibility, proactiveness, efficiency, and breakthrough acceleration".
Accordingly, the Prime Minister requested ministries, sectors and localities to focus on key tasks. Specifically, priority will be given to promoting economic growth associated with macroeconomic stability and controlling inflation. The Government also aims to achieve a growth rate of at least 8%, while controlling inflation at around 4.5%. New growth drivers such as digital transformation, green transformation, artificial intelligence, and cultural industries will be strongly developed.
One of the key tasks is to promote the development of strategic infrastructure, including the expansion of the transportation system, airports, seaports, and energy projects. The government will also focus on developing high-quality human resources, especially in high-tech fields, such as training semiconductor engineers.
The Prime Minister also requested to continue promoting Party building and building a clean and strong political system, while resolutely fighting corruption, negativity and waste.
2025 promises to be a challenging year but also a time for Vietnam to make a breakthrough, complete important goals of the 2021-2025 five-year plan, and enhance the country's position in the international arena.
