The World Scholar's Cup is an annual competition that brings together students from all over the world to compete, learn and connect. Debate is one of the important skills that contestants need to demonstrate in this playground. Every year, the competition attracts the participation of a large number of students from many countries and territories around the world.
Ngu To Duy, born in 2003, was known as the winner of entrance scholarships to 7 domestic and international universities. At the age of 18, Duy became an official judge for the regional round of the World Scholar's Cup and is the founder of The Great Debate.
In the 2025 World Scholar's Cup season, the team led by Ngu To Duy won the championship in all competition groups (including Senior and Junior), as well as the main competition categories of essay writing, debate and general knowledge.
Young coach Ngu To Duy shared: "The WSC competition or the subjects of debate, essay writing... all encourage students to form critical thinking and good listening skills. Students need to be equipped with enough basic knowledge so that they can have the ability to debate."
According to To Duy, to participate in a debate competition like the World Scholar's Cup, all contestants must go through a research process to fully understand the 2,000-page outline in English that covers in-depth topics in science and technology, classical literature, symphonies, famous scholars, or political and social issues. However, this knowledge is quite heavy for middle and high school students.
"The key to keeping students interested is creating an inspiring learning environment. To win in the competition, students not only need to memorize but also understand the knowledge deeply enough to analyze and judge questions and situations. The process of absorbing a large amount of knowledge requires endurance and a learning method that helps students exploit their full potential," Duy analyzed.
In this year's World Scholar's Cup, two contestants led by Duy won both Jac Khor awards in the most important categories of the competition. Contestant Pham Truong Giang won the Junior category (for students in grades 6, 7, and 8). And contestant Vu Ngoc Tue Lam won the Senior category (for students in grade 9).
These two students were simultaneously recognized by the organizing committee for achieving record high scores and winning the maximum number of medals. This is a rare event at the World Scholar's Cup.
The young coach said that when instructing candidates, Duy often focuses on learning methods so that each candidate can step out of their comfort zone.
Duy commented: "In reality, people cannot progress without being challenged. Giving small challenges at each stage of each lesson and each week of study helps students to continuously overcome and thus progress every day. This method of accumulating small things into big things has fostered the spirit of being ready to face challenges in students."
Developing critical thinking in the process of acquiring knowledge is extremely important. "Debate skills help students think broadly, logically and solve problems faster," Duy added.
