In the days leading up to Tet, banana prices in Cao Phong district have been increasing day by day. Many gardeners have earned hundreds of millions of dong thanks to soil-improving plants.
The banana garden of Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc's family in Tay Phong hamlet, Tay Phong commune, Cao Phong is waiting to be sold for Tet.
After many years of cultivating orange trees, many families in Cao Phong district have introduced short-term crops to improve the soil, including the pink banana variety. Banana trees are not picky about soil, grow well, and produce high yields with delicious fruit. From a few scattered households, the entire Cao Phong district has now grown 120 hectares of bananas.
Ms. Dao Thi Lien's family in Cao Phong town used to grow oranges for many years. Orange trees have brought her family a prosperous life. In addition to growing oranges, she converted 1 hectare to growing pink bananas. The banana garden is growing well, and yields a steady harvest every year. Ms. Lien shared that planting bananas at one time can yield 3 crops; 1 hectare can grow 2,500 trees, with a yield of about 40 - 60 tons. "Last year, banana prices were low, so my family did not earn much. This year, banana prices have skyrocketed from 6,000 VND/kg to 12,000 VND/kg, which surprised me. What's even more exciting is that traders have ordered the entire banana garden to sell during the Lunar New Year."
Sharing the same joy with Ms. Lien are hundreds of banana growers in Cao Phong town, Bac Phong commune, Tay Phong, who welcomed a prosperous Tet thanks to banana growing. Banana gardens that are well cared for and have beautiful fruit have all been ordered by traders. Meeting Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc in Tay Phong hamlet, Tay Phong commune, we can feel the joy of farmers here reaping sweet fruits. Mr. Phuc grows 3 hectares of bananas. About 2 months ago, he harvested half of the garden at a selling price of 8,000 VND/kg. Currently, his family still has 3,000 bunches of bananas to sell for Tet. "Now that the price is going up every day, I have not decided to sell yet. I still hope the price will go up. Many traders have ordered to buy the whole garden at 12,000 VND/kg but I have not agreed yet," said Mr. Phuc.
According to Mr. Phuc, planting red bananas once can yield 3 crops. Each hectare can grow 2,500 - 3,000 trees. Growing red bananas requires regular pruning and fertilization, watering once every 5 days. When the bananas are in the bunch, they must be regularly protected from fungal diseases, covered with plastic bags to prevent insects from biting and sucking, and to maintain a beautiful appearance. Mr. Phuc estimates that with the current high selling price, 1 hectare of bananas can yield about 600 million VND.
Not as lucky as Phuc and Lien, Le Hai Binh's family in Cao Phong town has a banana garden of more than 5,000 square meters but has no fruit to sell until Tet. Binh said: 2 years ago, banana prices were cheap, only 2,000 - 2,500 VND/kg, banana growers would lose money at that price, so this year I did not "hold back" to sell bananas for Tet. Through sporadic sales throughout the year, I sell as soon as the trees have fruit. My garden sold out 4 - 5 months ago, the price at that time was only about 5,000 VND/kg. Now the price is over 12,000 VND/kg, traders keep asking. There are bunches they ordered for 600,000 VND but there are no bananas to sell. From now until Tet, the price will be even higher.
Comrade Bui Van Dan, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cao Phong district, said: Currently, the district is focusing on implementing the project of replanting orange trees, so the areas that have been planted with oranges for many years must have their soil improved. In the past few years, people have chosen banana trees to improve the soil on the orange areas that have finished their cycle. Mainly the area of Cao Phong Hoa Binh Company Limited. The district does not plan to grow bananas for a long time. This year, the price has increased dramatically because the banana growing provinces in the lowlands were severely affected by storm Yagi, so the price of bananas has increased. The selling price of red bananas is often unstable, depending on objective conditions that are not sustainable.
