A study by scientists at the University of Leuven (Belgium) has opened up new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease.

A VNA reporter in Brussels cited a study published in the online scientific journal NPJ Regenerative Medicine saying that scientists studied Killi - a small turquoise African fish that lives in rainwater lakes.

Killi's aging process is similar to that of humans, with the result being memory loss (dementia).

After using a combination of two treatment drugs, Dasatinib and Quercetin, for 1 week, researchers found that the two drugs not only helped rejuvenate the fish brains but also protected them from future diseases or injuries.

Scientists believe that the drugs Dasatinib and Quercetin can kill aging brain cells.

First, the researchers, the only group currently studying the fish, figured out the basic mechanisms that govern the killifish’s ability to repair failing brain cells. The researchers found that their brains may be “aging.”

In other words, “diseased” or “aged” brain cells are present in large numbers and secrete harmful substances that prevent the normal functioning and recovery of surrounding brain cells.

“We were able to confirm this through the distinctive color of the aged cells,” explains researcher Jolien Van Houcke. “The difference between the ‘young’ and ‘old’ brains was huge, with the old brain showing a large number of diseased and aged cells.”

According to scientist Jolien Van Houcke, even a short-term treatment can eliminate 30% of senescent cells, helping to reduce harmful substances spreading to the brain.

“We are not only rejuvenating the brain, but also improving the regenerative capacity of aging cells,” she said.

The combination of Dasatinib and Quercetin has been tested in clinical studies.

Both drugs are already approved for use in humans, but to treat other conditions caused by "aging" cells in other parts of the body, such as kidney disease or damage in diabetic patients.

The researchers say the combination of the two drugs could also offer a solution to diseases related to brain aging in humans, such as those in patients with Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease.
