Although it has entered the 5th generation with a completely new appearance and equipment, the old Hyundai SantaFe, especially the mid-life upgrade (launched in 2021), is still one of the sought-after choices in the used car market.
The appeal of the Korean 7-seat Hyundai SantaFe SUV comes from its balanced design, many amenities and stable operation. Thanks to that, this car model has the ability to retain its value well when resold.
According to the used car market, a 2021 Hyundai SantaFe diesel is currently being sold for more than 1 billion VND. Meanwhile, at the time of purchase, the owner had to spend more than 1.3 billion VND to buy the car. Thus, after more than 3 years of use, this car model has only depreciated quite a bit.
Compared to competitors in the same segment and price range, SantaFe's price retention is clearly outstanding. Toyota Fortuner 2.4AT 4x2 version had a rolling price of about 1.25 billion VND in 2023, now only about 950 million VND on the used car market, meaning a depreciation of more than 20%. Similarly, Mazda CX-8 Premium version used to have a rolling price of about 1.3 billion VND, now reduced to 930 million VND, also recording a depreciation of over 20%.
Notably, even though Hyundai introduced the new generation SantaFe in September 2024 with many upgrades in design, comfort and operation, the price of used cars from 2021 - 2023 has not "cooled down".
Currently, the new generation Hyundai SantaFe SUV model is priced from 1.069 - 1.365 billion VND, depending on the version. However, the removal of the diesel engine option has caused many customers to return to buy old SantaFe models using this type of engine.
"The new Santa Fe is selling slowly partly because its design does not suit consumer tastes. More importantly, the durable, fuel-efficient diesel engine has been removed and replaced with a gasoline engine, so many customers are not interested," said a user looking to buy an old Hyundai Santa Fe with a diesel engine.
The fact that used Hyundai SantaFe cars retain their value also raises some concerns for those who want to buy used cars. Although they are highly appreciated for their quality and durability, buyers still need to be careful when choosing a car.
The top priority should be cars with low ODO numbers and clear maintenance history at authorized dealers. Although most 2023 SantaFes are still under warranty for 5 years or 100,000 km, many have been used at high intensity, making it easy to encounter carbon deposits in the intake manifold.
In addition, if the car has been used a lot, the buyer also needs to be mentally prepared to spend more on major maintenance, replacing parts such as brakes, suspension or some important engine components.
It is also important to check the bodywork carefully to ensure that the car has never been in a serious accident or has been flooded. These factors not only affect the vehicle’s performance but also significantly reduce its value in the future.
