After weeks of receiving complaints from users, Google has finally confirmed that the popular social networking app is a "silent battery drainer" on many Android devices.
Fortunately, an update has been released to address this nagging issue.
Instagram is one of the most popular apps on the Android operating system, with over a billion users worldwide. Recently, the Android user community has been in an uproar over Instagram's unusually high battery consumption, even when it's not open and just running in the background.
After a long silence from Meta developers, Google has officially stepped in.
The search giant has just advised Android users to update Instagram to the latest version to fix the battery drain issue. In a post on May 28, Google said Instagram has released "an updated version of the app that can fix the battery drain issue on Android devices".
Specifically, users are recommended to install build 382.0.0.49.84 from the Google Play Store to put an end to the sudden battery drain issue.
However, what makes many people curious is that both Google and Instagram have not yet given a clear explanation about the underlying cause that makes this application suddenly drain the device's battery significantly.
Before the official announcement, many users had to find ways to “save themselves”. Some chose to downgrade to an older version of Instagram, others temporarily switched to the Instagram Lite app and all recorded a significant improvement in battery life.
This is seen as indirect evidence that Instagram is the source of the problem.
Not only does it drain the battery, many people also report that their devices get significantly hotter when using Instagram.
Google has now confirmed that all Pixel phones that received the May system update are affected by the bug, but it’s unclear whether Android devices from other manufacturers are also affected, or if there’s something else that’s silently draining users’ batteries.
Therefore, Android users should immediately check for the latest Instagram update on Google Play Store and install it to protect the "health" of the battery on their device.
