iPhone 17 uses OpenAI's most powerful AI model just launched

Apple said it will integrate GPT-5, the most powerful AI model in history, just released by OpenAI, into the Apple Intelligence feature set in iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26.

Apple has confirmed that ChatGPT built into Apple Intelligence will soon be upgraded to use GPT-5, instead of the current GPT-4o. This will bring significant improvements to iPhone, iPad, and Mac users in September.

In Apple Intelligence, ChatGPT is being integrated on the latest platforms including iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and visionOS 2. Users can optionally enable or disable this feature in the privacy settings.

Apple confirmed that starting with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26, the system will be upgraded to GPT-5 – a major step forward in natural language processing and deeper contextual understanding. These updates are expected to be released as soon as next month, paving the way for users to soon access the power of OpenAI’s most advanced AI models.

To ensure privacy, Apple implements a number of technical measures such as hiding IP addresses and preventing OpenAI from storing the content of requests. In the event that a user chooses to link their own OpenAI account, all activities will be subject to OpenAI's privacy and data use policies, ensuring transparency and control for the user.

In addition to upgrading to the GPT-5 model, Apple Intelligence on iOS 26 continues to expand with a series of remarkable new features. One of the notable upgrades is real-time live translation, applied to applications such as FaceTime, Phone and Messages, making cross-language communication more seamless than ever.
