iPhone sets record, Samsung also benefits

While Apple is in the spotlight with record-breaking iPhone 17 sales, Samsung is quietly turning its rival's victory into its own money-making machine.

Last month, Apple introduced a new line of smartphones, including the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. While the iPhone 17 trio has significant improvements over its predecessor while maintaining the same price, the iPhone Air, with its ultra-thin frame, is one of the most unique phones on the market.

As a result, demand for the new iPhone has increased. According to Etoday (Korea), the iPhone 17 series is very popular in the Chinese market and has achieved impressive pre-order sales. Sales of the iPhone 17 in the first week increased by 47% compared to sales of the iPhone 16 last year.

The iPhone's strong sales are bad news for Samsung, as many people may abandon the Galaxy S and Galaxy Z series. However, the report also points out that the iPhone 17's boom is also beneficial for the Korean tech giant.

The iPhone 17 and iPhone Air series are equipped with 12GB LPDDR5X RAM. Apple uses this memory chip from Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, of which Samsung is the main supplier.

That means the higher the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air sales, the more memory chips Apple buys from Samsung, bringing in higher revenue and profits.

Additionally, as demand increases, prices also increase. With Apple needing large amounts of memory chips for its iPhones and other tech giants needing high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips for AI applications, Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are operating at full production capacity.

If they don't supply enough chips, memory prices could rise, meaning Samsung could make even more money from iPhone 17 sales.
