Israel suffers bitter consequences for underestimating Iran's ability to retaliate

Israel has suffered a bitter defeat for underestimating Iran's ability to retaliate after being attacked on its territory; the possibility that the US will have to come to the rescue of its ally.

Israel miscalculated by underestimating Iran’s ability to retaliate, and Iran is the one “reaping the benefits,” Swedish analyst Trita Parsi said in an interview with CNN yesterday.

According to expert Trita Parsi, the Israeli leadership expected that Iran would lose its ability to resist, after the removal of the top military leadership in the first hour of the war, but this did not happen. Of course, in the first moments after the start of the airstrikes, Israel tried to cause some chaos in Iran.

But what the Israeli leadership did not expect was that the Iranian military was ready to replace him and immediately launched retaliatory attacks on Israel. Moreover, Iranian missiles penetrated Israel's multi-layered air defense system. This was not the reaction that Tel Aviv expected from Iran, as Tel Aviv believed that with such a stunning blow, Tehran would quickly "give up its spear and surrender".

“They underestimated Iran’s ability to regroup, after Israel had successfully targeted the senior leadership of the Iranian military and killed several of them. Israel believed that they had disrupted Iran’s command and control, but that idea was quickly debunked,” said Trita Parsi.

Israel has been preparing for a preemptive strike on Iran for a long time and the steps were taken very carefully, with the participation of many forces. Israel's Operation Am KaLavi (Lion Rising) began on the night of June 13, taking Iran completely by surprise.

Simultaneously with the start of the attacks, “hard and soft” suppression operations were carried out against Iran’s air defense systems, as well as the top leadership of the republic. This brought results, as Tehran was unable to respond to Israeli attacks for up to 12 hours.

But now, the number of Iranian attacks on Israel is increasing, more and more Iranian missiles have successfully penetrated Israel's air defense system. In such a context, it is likely that the US will have to directly support Israel, saving its ally from heavy damage.

Israel and Iran continue to attack each other, and it is difficult to predict how and when things will end. And although at first glance it seems that Tel Aviv has taken Tehran by surprise with the first blows, significantly weakening both Iran's military power and its ability to command the army; many Israeli experts have raised doubts.

According to Israeli military expert Yossi Melman, the sooner the conflict between Israel and Iran ends, the better for Israel, not Iran. This expert called for “bringing the US president into the game” to resolve this conflict as soon as possible.

“I advise us to “cut our losses” and turn to US President Trump to discuss ending this madness with a reasonable agreement, otherwise we will have to beg for a ceasefire and Iran will then refuse,” Melman wrote on his personal page, on one of the social networks.

Perhaps Mr. Melman’s words are “worth listening to,” but it is clear that President Donald Trump knew all this, and without his consent, Israel would not have attacked Iran. He himself admitted this; moreover, he happily stated that all the negotiators with the Americans from the Iranian side “are no longer alive.”

Israel's attack on Iran, which was launched before the next round of negotiations between Washington and Tehran on the nuclear issue, was a surprise to Tehran, as it did not expect Tel Aviv to choose this time to attack Iran.

The Russian Military Review reported that Iran's missile forces responded to Israeli attacks on Tehran's Imam Khomeini and Fehrabad airports. On the night of June 15, a major fire was reported at Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv. The fire was caused by an Iranian missile attack.

Minutes before the missile attack on Ben Gurion Airport, Iran released a poster depicting a ballistic missile stylized with the Iranian symbol and statements about retaliation against Israel as part of Operation True Promise 3.

The airport named after Israel's first prime minister has been closed for the past few days. When Israel began its attacks on Iran, airlines pulled their planes from the airport. It is understood that some of them flew to Cyprus.

After today's attack, the infrastructure of Israel's main airport has been significantly damaged. Fuel depots and flight dispatch systems are on fire. The airport is engulfed in flames.

Damage to Ben-Gurion Airport could cut off Israel from all outside traffic, as Israel relies heavily on air traffic. The reason is Israel's geographical location, where it lives among "hostile neighbors," as Tel Aviv calls itself.

Earlier, Qatar's Al Jazeera news agency reported that Iranian missiles and suicide drones had attacked industrial enterprises and administrative facilities in northern Israel - in the cities of Haifa and Tiberias. It also reported that two reconnaissance UAVs were shot down in the southern Caspian Sea, including an American one. (photo source: Military Review, Sina, RT, IRNA, Al Jazeera).
