During excavations at the prehistoric site of Järvensuo 1 – an ancient wetland environment on the shores of Lake Rautajarvi in southwestern Finland – archaeologists from the University of Turku, in collaboration with the Finnish Heritage Agency and researchers from the University of Helsinki, discovered a strange, creepy-looking object. This stick is half a meter long, shaped like a natural slithering snake with an extremely clear, realistic snake head. Photo: @Finnish Heritage Agency.
Archaeologists believe that this snake-shaped staff may have been used by a Neolithic shaman for spiritual ritual purposes at this prehistoric site. The researchers also stressed that the prehistoric site of Järvensuo 1 is under threat, as drainage works and environmental changes caused by climate change are putting the site at risk. Signs of damage caused by the extensive drainage system are already evident at the site, and the organic archaeological treasures there are no longer safe. Photo: @Finnish Heritage Agency.
