Jordan will not sign a deal to supply solar power to Israel for desalinated water despite being scheduled to be ratified last month.
In an interview with Qatar-based Al Jazeera on November 16, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said that the current conflict between Hamas and Israel and Israel's blockade operations in the Gaza Strip were the reasons for Jordan's decision. Earlier this month, Jordan announced the withdrawal of its ambassador from Israel to express its opposition to Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip.
Ayman Safadi added that all Jordanian efforts were focused on ending what he described as Israel’s retaliation against Hamas in Gaza. Jordan would never enter into a dialogue about who would run Gaza after the conflict.
In relation to opposition to Israel, countries such as Türkiye, Bahrain and several others have also made similar moves.
Jordan and Israel signed an initial memorandum of understanding for Jordan to supply solar power to Israel in exchange for desalinated water in November 2021. The signing took place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) city of Dubai. This is part of the Abraham Accords to normalize relations between the Gulf Muslim countries and Israel.
