Assassination participant of former Haitian President sentenced to life in prison

Rodolphe Jaar is one of 11 defendants, including businessmen, accused of helping to get cars and guns from Florida and providing them to former Colombian soldiers to assassinate Mr Moise.

The murder of Mr. Moise in July 2021 has plunged Haiti into crisis ever since, with gang violence increasing at an alarming rate, causing concern for the United Nations and the international community.

Jaar signed a guilty plea in March, saying he provided the personnel and money to kidnap Mr Moise, but the plan later morphed into a murder plot.

Jaar was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Judge Jose Martinez of the Southern District of Florida. Jaar met with his co-defendants the night before the assassination. At the time, Haitian-American James Solages said the goal was to kill Moise.

Court documents add that Jaar also met with other defendants, including former Haitian Senator Joseph Joel John, Haitian-American Joseph Vincent, former Colombian military officer German Rivera and Antonio Intriago — the Venezuelan owner of a Miami-based private security company.

Jaar is also accused of helping a group of Colombians evade Haitian authorities, according to a statement from the US Justice Department . Jaar was detained in the Dominican Republic in early 2022.
