In the 32nd minute of the second leg of the 2024 ASEAN Cup final on the evening of January 5, striker Nguyen Xuan Son suffered a serious injury while dribbling at high speed and trying to cross the ball into the middle.
According to Tuoi Tre Online , Xuan Son has a broken fibula and tibia. VFF and the medical team of the organizing committee are carefully consulting on whether to operate on him immediately in Thailand or return to Vietnam to perform the surgery later.
After the emergency treatment, Xuan Son regained consciousness and was updated by his wife on the 2024 ASEAN Cup final match live via the phone screen.
Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Doctor CKII Ngo Thanh Y - deputy head of the department of on-demand treatment and sports medicine at People's Hospital 115 - said that according to observations, the image of striker Xuan Son's leg being bent is likely due to a fracture of the middle third of the two tibia bones.
There are two bones in the lower leg, the tibia and the fibula. The tibia is the main bone, and when it breaks, both bones usually break.
However, the ability to recover to continue playing sports with a fracture like the one above is still there because the bone will heal quickly.
"After surgery, the bone will recover very well. If combined with exercise for 6 months to 1 year, the patient will be able to play sports again as usual," said Dr. Y.
According to the Italian doctor, if there are no other injuries such as knee ligaments, the patient can still rotate, move and have good reflexes. However, if there are injuries such as ligament ruptures, the recovery ability will be poorer.
In addition, the ability to recover also depends on many factors such as the doctor's skills, including the ability to adjust and fix the bones in the correct position.
External factors such as infection, accident or subjectivity during the healing process and physical therapy can affect the recovery results.
Broken leg bones in Vietnam are not uncommon.
According to Dr. Ngo Thanh Y, leg fractures are not uncommon in Vietnam due to the high rate of motorbike use. When involved in traffic accidents, victims often suffer leg fractures.
Depending on the location of the fracture of the tibia, the prognosis for recovery will vary.
In sports, this type of injury is less common, but can still occur, mainly ligament rupture.
