Nowadays, the air conditioning system is one of the basic, important and mandatory amenities in cars to cool the interior, creating a comfortable feeling for the people sitting in the car. On the control panel of the system, there is usually a button to switch between two modes of air intake inside and outside (symbol: curved arrow, inside the car) but few people pay attention to the difference and how to use it effectively.
Simply put, the internal air intake mode is to return the circulating air in the cabin to the air conditioner for faster cooling. The advantage of this mode is that it helps save cooling time and maintain a stable temperature inside the car, especially on hot days or when the car is moving in polluted air conditions.
However, the disadvantage of using only internal air is that the air will not be refreshed. The amount of oxygen in the car gradually decreases, while CO2 from human breath accumulates, leading to suffocation and lack of oxygen. If this condition persists, people in the car may feel tired, lethargic, lose concentration, and even sleepy. This can easily lead to accidents when driving continuously.
On the contrary, the outside air intake mode brings air from the outside environment into the cabin, helping to refresh the air flow, provide more oxygen and balance the CO2 concentration in the car. Although the cooling effect is not as fast as the inside air and sometimes brings along dust and unpleasant odors from the outside, this mode is very necessary on long trips.
In particular, for vehicles that do not have an automatic system to switch between the two modes, the driver should proactively switch to outside air after a certain period of time to ensure the air in the car is always fresh.
When driving long distances, the appropriate use of the two air intake modes is an important factor to ensure alertness and safety. Some car manufacturers now integrate the automatic rotation between inside and outside air to minimize the risk of lack of oxygen in the cabin.
However, not all cars have this feature, so drivers need to understand how it works to adjust it properly, avoiding falling asleep and lacking concentration for no apparent reason.
