Nguyen Xi was born in the year of the Ox (1397) in Thuong Xa village, Chan Phuc district, now Khanh Hop commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province. He was the one who made great contributions in repelling the Ming army, helping Le Loi ascend the throne and was considered one of the founding fathers of the Le dynasty.

During his career as an official, Nguyen Xi served four Le dynasties: Le Thai To, Le Thai Tong, Le Nhan Tong, Le Thanh Tong and held many important positions in the royal court at that time. In addition, he was the one who made many important contributions to the formation of many villages in the Northern Delta, the Eastern region of Nghi Loc district and Cua Lo town in the 15th century.

In 1465, after Nguyen Xi passed away, the Le Dynasty was extremely saddened and posthumously awarded him the title of "Thai Su Cuong Quoc Cong, Prich An Khai Quoc, Thuy Nghia Vu". The king had his body preserved in Dien Kinh Thien, then his coffin was transferred to his hometown, now Khanh Hop commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province, for burial and entrusted to his descendants and the people to build a temple to worship and engrave a stele to remember him forever.

Nguyen Xi Temple, Khanh Hop Commune, Nghi Loc District is the largest temple in Nghe An, built nearly 600 years ago. Through many historical events, the relic still retains its ancient beauty with the architecture in the style of "inner public, outer private", arranged symmetrically and harmoniously. In 1990, Cuong Quoc Cong Nguyen Xi Temple was ranked as a National Historical Relic by the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism; in 2020, the relic was ranked as a Special National Relic by the Prime Minister.
