In the 1960s, when photography was still expensive, sketching was a popular way to record news from the battlefield. Therefore, from North to South, many young people participated in "Resistance Art" courses, equipping themselves with soldier-like skills to work on the most intense fronts.

The paintings of the late artist Pham Thanh Tam were created in that context, with the roar of airplanes on one side and the explosions of bombs and bullets on the other.

From 1954 to the 1960s and 1970s, artist Pham Thanh Tam diligently sketched on the battlefield, in trenches and bunkers, to record the daily life and battles of the soldiers at Dien Bien Phu and the people of the war-torn areas of Vinh Linh, Quang Binh , and Ha Tinh.

More than half a century later, artist Dinh Quang Hai also began his "Painting - Traveling - Bamboo" project in the places that the late artist Pham Thanh Tam had visited, aiming to record his impressions of the landscapes and lifestyles of the people in those regions through a contemporary lens. He still chooses the "slow motion" method, using paper and watercolors, even though photography has become a popular and immediate medium.

Within the framework of the 2024 Festival for Peace Program, the "Revival" painting series is a duet recounting the transformation of a land once ravaged by war. "Revival" is a continuation of the past and present, vividly depicted through 130 paintings by the late artist Pham Thanh Tam and artist Dinh Quang Hai, with themes such as: tunnels - sky; people; daily life; transportation; rest; and landscapes. These paintings capture Quang Tri during a time of bombs and bullets, and the people who were present during that fierce period are now recreated through the works at the exhibition.

The exhibition is not intended to awaken painful memories of a time of bombs and bullets, but rather to honestly look back at what happened in the past, to see how what was once a "land of fire" has been reborn after all these years.

This is also an opportunity for the younger generation to better understand the lives of people during wartime, to have a more empathetic and grateful perspective on the immense sacrifices made by previous generations who laid down their lives for the peaceful Quang Tri we see today.

It also serves as a place to introduce visitors to a better understanding of the history, resilience, and determination of the people of Quang Tri in particular and the people of Vietnam in general, thereby understanding the significance of efforts to maintain peace and friendship between nations.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Head of the Provincial National Assembly Delegation Hoang Duc Thang shared that Quang Tri is a land rich in historical and cultural traditions, but it also holds within it the tragic heroism and ferocity of the war for national liberation and reunification more than 50 years ago. And today, Quang Tri has been rising strongly, reviving from that immense pain, loss, and sacrifice to develop with fervent aspirations.

The "Revival" art exhibition embodies these noble meanings, bringing together exceptional works of art meticulously created by talented and dedicated artists.

Each painting tells a story, offering a perspective on the country's and people's recovery after the war, conveying a message of faith, hope, and a yearning for peace. These works not only reflect reality but also evoke emotions, reflections, and aspirations for a better future.

Deputy Head of the Provincial Delegation of National Assembly Deputies Hoang Duc Thang expressed sincere gratitude to the artists and highly appreciated the agencies, organizations, and units that have accompanied, sponsored, and supported the success of this meaningful exhibition, contributing to the overall success of the Festival for Peace.

The "Revival" art exhibition runs until July 11, 2024.
