The amber buttons were placed face down in rows and sewn onto a leather sheet covering the deceased, while amber decorations lined the edges of the burial pit. Photo: @Petrozavodsk State University.
Extensive archaeological research has shown that the tomb dates back to around 3,400 BC, during the transitional period between the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. During this period, metal and stone mining was particularly developed in some areas, along with the processing of these materials into valuable goods and objects. Archaeologists from Petrozavodsk State University are also investigating workshops for the production of axes and chisel axes, which were discovered right next to the burial site. Photo: @Petrozavodsk State University.
Researchers hypothesize that the deceased may have been a trader from the eastern Baltic states who came to the western shore of Lake Onega to trade amber for axes. This makes sense, as the Baltic region is home to the largest known deposits of amber, known as Baltic amber or succinite. It dates back 44 million years (during the Eocene epoch) and is prized for its color, natural beauty, and ability to be shaped. Photo: @Petrozavodsk State University.
