On April 7th, information from Xuyen A General Hospital in Vinh Long indicated that the hospital had just treated a female patient who was in critical condition and at risk of shock after eating coconut beetle larvae.
Accordingly, after examining and exploiting the pathology, the doctor determined that the patient had an allergic shock due to eating coconut worms and quickly proceeded to treat the patient such as intravenous fluids, antihistamines, and corticosteroids. The patient's condition improved. At this time, the patient was less tired, blood pressure was stable, and past the dangerous stage. The patient was transferred to the General Internal Medicine Department for further monitoring.
Patient had rash and difficulty breathing after eating coconut worms
According to the medical history, the family reported that about three hours after eating two coconut beetle larvae, the patient began experiencing abdominal pain, nausea, red and itchy skin rashes all over the body, along with fatigue, shortness of breath, and signs of shock.
Currently, the patient's health is stable, no longer has hives and is expected to be discharged in the next few days.
Doctors advise that in cases of food poisoning from insects, if the victim is still conscious, they should induce vomiting. In severe cases, with difficulty breathing and weak breathing, artificial respiration should be administered. After first aid, the victim should be quickly taken to a medical facility for prompt treatment.
Coconut beetle larvae are a type of insect larva that is quite high in protein, fat, and vitamins A, C, and B1, making them a nutritious food and a popular delicacy. Although coconut beetle larvae are rich in nutrients, caution should be exercised when consuming them.
