Even though he hasn't reached the medal final yet, surfing's top star Gabriel Medina has already left a historic moment at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In the third round of the men's surfing event on July 30 in Tahiti Island (France), athlete Gabriel Medina (30 years old, from Sao Sebastiao, Brazil) created the best waves in Olympic history, achieving a record score of 9.9 out of 10. Tahiti is known to be the most remote Olympic venue and one of the most extreme and special locations of all time.
One of the most impressive photos capturing the moment Medina celebrated after breaking the record was taken by Jérôme Brouillet, a photographer for the French news agency AFP. In the photo, Medina appears to be standing in mid-air, floating on his skateboard. Just a few hours after being posted, the photo went viral on social media.
According to Brouillet, he took the photo while on a nearby boat in "perfect conditions, the waves were higher than expected. Medina was behind the wave and I couldn't see him. Then Medina appeared, and I took four photos, one of which is this one," Brouillet said. "It's not difficult to get a photo like this, the key is to predict when and where Gabriel will appear."
