Sharing about this direction, Mr. Duc said that he has been passionate about ornamental fish since childhood, so he often spends time learning about how to raise them as well as the needs of the market. Realizing that the ornamental fish farming profession, especially raising fish from fry to large-sized fish, has a lot of economic potential, in 2023, he decided to return to his hometown to invest in a Koi fish breeding model.
At the beginning of his career, Mr. Duc received his first shock when all of his more than 400 Koi fish, 6-10 cm in size, imported directly from China, died after about 4 months of raising them. The reason was his lack of experience in food, water treatment, and toxic gas accumulated in the pond, causing the fish to be poisoned and die.
Not discouraged, he sought out professional agencies and Koi fish farms in other localities to learn from their experiences. Up to now, Mr. Duc has mastered the technical process of breeding Koi fish, as well as the knowledge of raising Koi fish to advise customers.
Mr. Duc's Koi fish pond has an area of 800m2 and is fully equipped with a water fan system and automatic feeding machine. From having to import fish for care and commercial farming when he first started his business, he has now taken the initiative in sourcing local fish by selecting pairs of parent fish with beautiful colors and artificially breeding them.

Mr. Duc said that currently, on average, he raises more than 70,000 fry per crop, and after about 3 months of care, he will harvest about 30,000 Koi fish with sizes ranging from 10 to 20cm. To promote his Koi fish brand, in addition to selling directly at home, Mr. Duc also regularly livestreams on social networks such as Facebook and TikTok.
Of these, large fish with beautiful colors cost from 800,000 VND - 4 million VND/fish; the rest are sold for 250,000 - 400,000 VND/kg. Social networking sites are also where Mr. Duc shares his fish farming experience with everyone.
“My customers who buy Koi fish are mainly from the provinces and neighboring provinces and cities. I am currently targeting the general public, so that everyone can own and satisfy their passion for raising Koi fish,” said Mr. Duc.
According to Mr. Duc, raising Koi fish is not difficult but requires the breeder to be meticulous, from cleaning, renovating the pond, treating the water source to choosing food, chemicals to treat the environment, and medicine to treat diseases.
During the raising process, you must know how to observe the color of the fish, grasp each stage of development to have appropriate care. Especially for Koi fish, the selling price is determined by the pattern and color, so to raise fish with natural beauty, the food and water source must be clean and sufficient.
Specifically, to increase the color of the fish, the food must have a protein content of 35% or more. Feed the fish 5-6 times/day to ensure the growth of the fish. During the rainy season, prevent fish diseases by adding salt and vitamin C to the water, helping to increase the fish's resistance.
“To have a beautiful batch of fish, the important factor is that the fish must be selected from beautiful parent fish. Therefore, in addition to self-breeding, farmers need to “hunt” for fish with impressive colors through groups and large, reputable fish farms. In addition, during the farming process, it is necessary to pay attention to diseases caused by parasites, gill fungus, and water mites. If not detected and treated promptly, the fish will die,” Mr. Duc noted.
According to engineer Tran Nan, Head of the Hai Lang Regional Agricultural Extension Station, Mr. Le Minh Duc's Koi fish breeding model is the first model in the area and has initially brought quite high economic efficiency. The value of each Koi fish, in addition to its color, also depends on the breeding time and the weight of the fish. There are Koi fish that cost only a few hundred thousand VND, but there are also fish worth tens of millions of VND.
However, compared to traditional fish farming, Koi fish farming requires farmers to pay attention to pond sanitation, water treatment, food selection, and disease treatment. Koi fish farming ponds must have a suitable area, a depth of 0.8 - 1.5m, clean water, pH always maintained at 7 - 7.5, and not too much algae.
Sharing about the upcoming orientation, Mr. Duc said that he will continue to invest in expanding the scale of the model, first of all, he will build 2 more ponds with similar areas to import purebred Koi fish, F1 from Japan to breed in order to expand the customer base and meet market demand.
