Empowering learners to be creative.
After studying a literary work, instead of requiring students to write argumentative essays in the traditional way, Dr. Le Thanh Son, a Literature teacher at Lien Chieu High School (Hai Van Ward), organizes a project-based learning approach that focuses on creating digital content.
For example, using familiar works like Nam Cao's Chí Phèo, students are empowered to be creative and express their individuality. Some groups choose to create short videos recreating the emotions of the character Thị Nở, while others choose to paint pictures depicting the scars on Chí Phèo's face to highlight the work's critical message...
According to Dr. Le Thanh Son, it is the diversity in the approach and implementation of these lessons that makes students more enthusiastic and proactive in the learning process. Students get to experience and apply their knowledge to life, while also developing many positive skills.
Beyond innovation in individual subjects, the interdisciplinary project-based learning model also opens up new learning spaces. With the project "Decoding Urban Memories - From the Cu De River to Nguyen Tat Thanh Beach," teachers don't just lecture on the work; they guide students through practical fieldwork.
Students apply their geographical knowledge to survey the terrain, their historical knowledge to understand the urbanization process of the former Lien Chieu district, now Hai Van ward, and their literary skills to write reports, essays, or create explanatory videos about the changes in their hometown.
This approach encourages students to be proactive and creative, increasing their interest in learning and contributing to the development of problem-solving skills and practical language abilities.
From a different perspective, Ms. Vu Thi Huong, a Geography teacher and Head of the Geography Department at Thai Phien High School (Thanh Khe Ward), believes that Geography teaching is shifting strongly from a content-based approach to a competency-based approach. To make the subject less dry, Ms. Huong combines two parallel approaches: applying technology and increasing practical experience.
A prime example is the project "Creating Geography Comics and Videos Using AI." Instead of just listening to lectures, 10th-grade students transform into content creators, writing scripts, creating illustrations, and building videos explaining natural laws or monsoon mechanisms.
Along with technology, activities that "touch" daily life are also maintained, such as visiting the Hoang Sa Exhibition House, field trips to Ngu Hanh Son ward, and organizing cultural and culinary festivals…
According to Ms. Huong, the new methods have brought about a noticeable change: students are more proactive, more confident in debating, know how to ask questions of the teacher, and confidently defend their viewpoints.
Methods to unlock learning inspiration
According to teacher Vu Thi Huong, however, to create enthusiasm for teaching and learning, a more open legal framework is needed for extracurricular educational activities, as the current procedures for practical experience are still complicated. At the same time, to effectively apply digital transformation and AI, schools need investment in network infrastructure and equipment to enable teachers and students to realize their creative ideas.

Dr. Le Thanh Son believes that for Literature, History, and Geography to truly transform, a synchronized effort from many sides is needed: schools creating a creative space for teachers; the education sector continuing to provide professional development in a practical way; considering reducing administrative forms and procedures so that teachers have more time to invest in their lessons; gradually building a learning environment that respects differences and encourages students to express their opinions; and creating an "open" learning space to support interdisciplinary research and experiential activities.
From a teacher training perspective, Ms. Doan Thi Thong, Lecturer in the Department of History, Geography, and Politics, University of Education (Da Nang University), noted that the status of Literature, History, and Geography subjects is being recognized more accurately in the 2018 general education curriculum. These are fundamental subjects that cultivate character, thinking skills, and civic competence.
Ms. Doan Thi Thong believes that practical experience, interdisciplinary approaches, and the application of technology are the golden keys to revitalizing social science subjects. Technology helps design lively and diverse lessons, while practical experience fosters genuine emotions, a crucial element in ensuring lasting retention of knowledge in students' minds. In this way, Literature, History, and Geography will no longer be subjects to be memorized, but will become cultural and intellectual tools for students to enter life.
