Can we create a trend of being Chi Pheo and eating Thi No's onion porridge in Nam Cao's hometown?

Experts say that Dai Hoang village (Vu Dai village in the Chi Pheo stories by writer Nam Cao) can completely create a trend for tourists to come and drink Thi No's onion porridge, or experience a day as Chi Pheo, Thi No, sleeping in Ba Kien's bed...

Experts shared ideas at the scientific workshop Promoting the value of cultural heritage in the hometown of writer Nam Cao associated with sustainable tourism development organized by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ha Nam province, the Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism and the People's Committee of Hoa Hau commune (Ly Nhan district, Ha Nam province) on June 20 right in the hometown of writer Nam Cao.

Proposal to put the story Chi Pheo as the 5th "monster" of Ly Nhan

Writer Nam Cao was born in 1915. This year marks the 110th anniversary of his birth. Many experts and researchers in literature and tourism have affirmed the great stature of writer Nam Cao.

Writer Chau Hong Thuy - a son of Ly Nhan district, Nam Cao's hometown - said that people in the Northern Delta often recite the saying "Nam Xang Tu Quai" (Nam Xang district has four strange stories).

Those are the stories of Princess My E, the story of the Nam Xuong girl from Chan Ly commune, the story of the god who captured the prisoner in Duc Ly commune; the story of the Emperor's Grave in Cau Khong.

Mr. Chau Hong Thuy believes that because of its unique nature in Vietnamese literature, the character Chi Pheo has become a "new literary classic", a "brand" of Nam Cao and of the entire Ly Nhan region.

He proposed to honor the story of Chi Pheo as the fifth "monster" story, to form the "Nam Xang Ngu Quai" series, the pride of Ly Nhan's hometown.

Prof. Dr. Tran Dang Xuyen (former head of the Literature Department of Hanoi National University of Education) affirmed that Nam Cao's reputation is very great. Exploiting tourism on the cultural heritage the writer left in his homeland is a very correct direction.

He suggested that when exploiting tourism in Dai Hoang village of writer Nam Cao, with the memorial site of writer Nam Cao, Ba Kien's house, Dai Hoang fish-kettle craft village..., it should be combined with other destinations related to famous writers and poets in the surrounding area such as Tu Xuong's tomb, A Nam Tran Tuan Khai's tomb, and Nguyen Khuyen village.

Experience is Chi Pheo, Thi No, Ba Kien

In particular, giving advice on tourism products that can be built in Nam Cao's hometown, Dr. Nguyen Minh San said that it is completely possible to create a trend of eating Thi No's onion porridge when young people come to Dai Hoang village.

Dr. Architect Nguyen Thu Hanh believes that Hoa Hau commune can build the first literary tourism area in Vietnam based on the cultural heritage left by Nam Cao.

For example, it is possible to build products such as staying overnight in Ba Kien's room, staying overnight in Chi Pheo's brick kiln, staying at Bam Cu's house, experiencing a day as Chi Pheo or Thi No.

Visitors coming here can experience the Oh My God market, with the banyan tree, Chi Pheo wine shop, Thi No onion porridge shop, ao yem stall, Dai Hoang braised fish stall, stalls selling local specialties...

Visit the "Banana garden of Vu Dai village" as described by Nam Cao, the "Brick Kiln Park" area, Ba Kien's house area with many experiences of Ba Kien's daily life as described by Nam Cao in the story.

Currently, Hoa Hau commune, Ha Nam province (from July 1, 2025 will be Nam Ly commune, Ninh Binh province) still preserves the house of the prototype Ba Kien in the short story Chi Pheo in Dai Hoang village.

The 121-year-old house was purchased by the state in 2007 and is currently managed by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ha Nam province.

Free admission.

Next to it are households that make the famous traditional fish stew of Dai Hoang village and grow royal bananas. Visitors can visit and buy local products.

Hoa Hau commune also built a memorial area for writer Nam Cao here. Visitors can visit the writer's grave as well as learn about his life, career, and background through the exhibits.
