According to the initial investigation, on the night of May 20, Cuong drove a motorbike carrying Ly along National Highway 1 to see if anyone was careless and steal their property. At 2 a.m. on May 21, when they arrived at a gas station in An Hoa Hai Commune (Tuy An District), the two discovered a 5-seat tourist car stopping on the side of the road.
Seeing the car window rolled down a bit, Ly approached, put her hand through the gap in the window to steal the handbag of a woman sleeping in the back seat. At that moment, the woman suddenly woke up and shouted, so Cuong accelerated his motorbike to escape, while Ly was chased by the people in coordination with the police force, arrested at the scene with the evidence being the handbag, inside of which was 250 million VND.
During an urgent search of Ly’s residence, authorities seized many handbags, mobile phones, cash from many countries and other evidence suspected of being related to other thefts. Cuong was also arrested shortly afterwards and confessed to his crimes.
According to the provincial police, both Ly and Cuong have criminal records for theft and intentional injury. The case is still under investigation.
