Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that strong cold air is moving down, around January 20 it will affect mountainous areas, a day later it will expand throughout the Northeast and the Red River Delta.
Since January 22, cold air has continuously intensified, the entire North and North Central regions have been immersed in severe cold (average daily temperature of 15 degrees or lower) and severe cold (average daily temperature of 13 degrees or lower).

According to Mr. Lam, this cold air mass will last at least until the end of next week (January 28), with the coldest temperature on January 22-23, with the lowest temperature in the plains below 10 degrees Celsius, the midlands below 7 degrees Celsius, and the highlands below 0 degrees Celsius.
In the first days of the cold air, the North and North Central regions will have thunderstorms. There is a possibility of frost in the highlands.
The American website Accuweather predicts that tomorrow Hanoi will have temperatures of 20-27 degrees Celsius, then drop rapidly to 13-20 degrees Celsius by Sunday. Cold weather will hit Hanoi on January 22-23, with temperatures dropping to 9-15 degrees Celsius.
Mau Son Mountain ( Lang Son ) is the first to be affected by cold air, with temperatures dropping to minus 1 degree Celsius from Monday next week. The highest point over 1,500 meters above sea level in Sa Pa (Lao Cai) will be cold at 5-7 degrees Celsius next Thursday.
The Central region is affected by cold air with the level decreasing along the terrain. If next week Thanh Hoa will have the lowest temperature of 12-15 degrees, Da Nang , located south of Hai Van Pass, will maintain 20-22 degrees Celsius.
From January 21, the Gulf of Tonkin and the North East Sea (including the waters of the Hoang Sa archipelago) will have strong northeast winds of level 6-7, gusting to level 8-9. The strong winds will then tend to spread to the southern seas, causing rough seas.
The Standing Office of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control has requested that provinces and cities in the North and North Central regions closely monitor forecasts of severe cold to guide people to proactively prevent and avoid using honeycomb coal stoves to warm up in closed rooms; and review plans to ensure safety for boarding students.
The government needs to disseminate and guide livestock farming households to strengthen their barns, cover them to keep them warm, and store food; prevent diseases for livestock, poultry, and aquatic products; and provide guidance on measures to ensure safety for rice, vegetable, and other crop production. Mountainous provinces need to warn of the risk of frost and slippery conditions to ensure the safety of people and vehicles.
In the winter-spring season of 2023-2024, the North experienced a severe cold spell on December 17-27, 2023. On December 22, Mau Son had a cold temperature of minus 2.5 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the past 11 years.
