Following the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that shook Dingri County in Shigatse City, Tibet Autonomous Region, on the morning of January 7th, the Mount Everest scenic area stopped receiving visitors from 10 a.m.

All tours that had been planned to visit the Everest region have been postponed.

Tourists wishing to reach Everest from Tibet must pass through Dingri County, which is also the closest stop for those wishing to climb the mountain. Both Everest bases located in China are situated in Dingri County.

An employee at the scenic area said the reopening time would depend on the actual situation after the aftershocks. The district's power supply has not yet been fully restored.

According to the Dingri County Department of Culture and Tourism , the hotel buildings and the areas surrounding and within the Everest site remain intact.

Located on the China-Nepal border, Everest, at 8,840 meters, is the world's highest mountain. The northern part of the mountain, located in Tibet, is expected to welcome nearly 14,000 international visitors in 2024, double the number in 2023.
