"Friendly stream" connects local communities

Thai ethnic people in Hiet village, Son Thuy commune (Quan Son) go down to Xia stream to fish.

Son Thuy commune has 4 ethnic groups: Thai, Mong, Muong, Kinh, each ethnic group has its own unique culture formed long ago. In Hiet village, 100% of the people are Thai ethnic group.

Faced with the risk of depletion of aquatic resources in streams, in recent years the Management Board of Ban Hiet, Son Thuy commune has built a conservation model, contributing to environmental protection and increasing community cohesion.

Thanks to good protection work, Xia stream is very clear and clean.

Accordingly, in the Xia stream section running through Hiet village, about 3km long, after a meeting with the people and reaching an agreement, the village management board divided the stream into 1.5km to manage and protect water resources and aquatic products. After several years of implementing the "friendly stream" model, local people have now self-monitored and prevented people from other localities from freely fishing.

Hundreds of people went down to the stream to catch fish.

Vice Chairman of Son Thuy Commune People's Committee, Lu Anh Huong said: "Thanks to the good management, propaganda and protection of the stream, in recent years the number of cool fish species following the water flow to Xia stream has increased day by day. Fish grow very quickly in the prohibited fishing area, in which, fish species at risk of extinction such as cham fish, doc fish, mai fish (in Thai called pa khinh) ... have also been revived. The fishing community is involved in stream protection, monitoring fishing activities and detecting violations that negatively affect the environment. At the same time, it is necessary to notify the functional forces and local authorities to take timely measures to prevent and handle violations, contributing to protecting the resources and living environment of aquatic species".

Fish are caught by people at Xia stream.

On holidays and Tet, the village management board organizes fishing for the whole village. After catching, the fish are divided equally among the villagers to bring home for their own use, making everyone in the village happy and excited.

Mr. Ngan Van Ngon, a resident of Hiet village, shared: “On the occasion of April 30 this year, the people of Hiet village caught more than 100 kg of fish from Xia stream, and divided them equally among the households. The activity took place in a joyful and exciting atmosphere to celebrate the country's reunification day. I find this activity very meaningful, contributing to respecting and preserving natural resources; at the same time, arousing and further strengthening solidarity, creating an enthusiastic atmosphere for labor production.”
