Kia EV5 GT 2026 launched, electric SUV runs 529 km/charge
The Kia EV5 has just been launched in Europe. In the first launch, consumers will only have the option of a front-wheel drive (FWD) version with a single electric motor configuration.

Specifically, the European version of the Kia EV5 will use a single electric motor with a capacity of 215 horsepower (160 kW), front-wheel drive. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h is 8.4 seconds - a number that is only average. The plus point of the EV5 is the 81.4 kWh battery pack using NMC technology (not LFP as in some other markets). The new battery pack gives a range of up to 530 km (WLTP standard) in the standard version. However, higher versions like the GT-Line use large 19-inch wheels, which reduces the range to 505 km, and the upcoming GT with 20-inch wheels is expected to be even lower.
One notable limitation is that the EV5 is not equipped with an 800V electrical system like its predecessors, the EV6 or EV9. This makes the fast charging time from 10-80% take about 30 minutes, longer than the under 20 minutes of high-end models. In return, the car still supports reverse charging (V2L - Vehicle-to-Load), helping to supply power to external devices such as refrigerators, laptops, electric bicycles - suitable for picnics or working away from home. The EV5 has a modern interior with a cluster of three screens: a 5.3-inch air-conditioning screen located between two 12.3-inch screens - one displaying driving information and one central entertainment screen. The highlight is the appearance of the Kia AI virtual assistant integrated with ChatGPT technology, allowing users to control many features by voice without direct manipulation.
In addition, the rear seats are also equipped with separate control screens for the three-zone air conditioning system, providing a more comfortable experience for passengers. Kia is positioning the EV5 as an electrified alternative to the Sportage – its best-selling SUV. However, the EV5 is larger in size, with a 70mm increase in length and a correspondingly extended wheelbase, giving it a more spacious interior and a more premium feel. However, the EV5’s main rival in Europe is none other than the Tesla Model Y facelift. Although Kia has not yet announced official pricing, the Model Y Long Range RWD with an acceleration time of just 5.9 seconds and a range of around 500 km is a significant challenge.
The biggest downside to the EV5 in Europe right now is the lack of an all-wheel drive (AWD) option. Kia has confirmed that the 308-horsepower AWD version, as well as the high-performance EV5 GT, won’t arrive until 2026. As such, customers who require a better driving experience and more flexible control, especially in bad weather conditions, are forced to wait for the high-performance EV5 GT or look for other options.
