According to The Guardian on November 19, Mount Semeru erupted violently, covering many villages with ash, forcing people to evacuate and authorities to raise the warning level to the highest level.
The Indonesian Geological Agency said the volcano in East Java province has been spewing hot ash clouds, a mixture of rocks, lava, etc. several times a day, forcing authorities to raise the volcano alert level twice, from level three to the highest. There have been no reports of casualties.
“More than 300 residents in three villages most at risk in Lumajang district have been evacuated to safety,” said Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the national disaster mitigation agency, adding that increased volcanic activity on Tuesday afternoon forced authorities to expand the danger zone to 8 km from the crater. Residents were advised to stay away from the area along the Besuk Kobokan River, where lava flows.

Local media reported that local authorities were attempting to rescue about 178 people trapped on the 3,676-meter-high mountain at Ranu Kumbolo observation post. The group included 137 climbers, 15 porters, seven guides and six tourism staff, according to an official from the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park (TNBTS).
Semeru, also known as Mahameru, has erupted several times in the past 200 years. Tens of thousands of people continue to live on Semeru's fertile hillsides, like many of Indonesia's 129 active volcanoes.
Semeru’s most recent major eruption was in December 2021, killing 51 people and burying entire villages in mud. The eruption forced more than 10,000 people to evacuate for safety.
