Although the buyout clause for Walker was only 5 million euros, AC Milan still refused. This forced the English defender to return to Man City in disgrace after a year on loan.
The England star had previously moved to Italy in an attempt to escape family troubles. His move came amid a personal scandal, as Walker struggled to hold on to his marriage to Annie Kilner, the mother of his four children.
Initially, the player born in 1990 had a promising start in Italy with three unbeaten matches in his first three starts. However, his form has since declined significantly along with Milan's poor performance. Currently, the red and black striped team is struggling in 8th place in Serie A.
The 34-year-old defender has made 12 appearances in all competitions for Sergio Conceicao's side but has been sidelined since undergoing surgery on an elbow injury in April.
Although Walker's loan deal includes an option to buy for just £4.2m (€5m) at the end of the season, AC Milan have no intention of keeping him long-term.
The former Tottenham star's elbow injury, coupled with the impressive emergence of young talent Alex Jimenez at right-back, is believed to have convinced the Milan board to abandon the deal.
Walker previously revealed he "wanted to cry" when he left Man City and admitted he did not think his time at the Etihad was over.
The treble winner wants to leave the Etihad amid concerns that limited playing time will affect his international career. Walker featured in both of Thomas Tuchel's opening World Cup qualifiers in March.
"I want to play in Europe or stay in the Premier League. I still want to represent my country and reach the milestone of 100 caps," Walker added.
With just two Serie A games remaining, AC Milan are in serious danger of missing out on European football next season, trailing sixth-placed Roma by three points. However, they still have a chance to win the title when they face Bologna in the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday night.
