Reuters news agency reported that at noon on December 25 (local time), the operating company Fingrid announced on the Nordpool management website that an unexpected incident occurred with the Estlink 2 connection line, causing the available transmission capacity to decrease from 1,016 MW to 358 MW.

According to operator Fingrid, so far only the 358 MW Estlink 1 has been supplying power between the two countries. Estlink 2, which has been operational since 2014, is a supplement to Estlink 1, the first HVDC link between the two countries, which opened in 2006.

Immediately, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo clearly announced on social network X that: "Authorities are still ready to investigate this case even during Christmas."

On December 26, Finnish police announced that they were investigating the possibility that a foreign vessel was involved in the incident and were coordinating with border guards and other authorities to investigate, but did not provide further details.

This is the latest in a series of energy supply incidents that have occurred in the Baltic Sea region since 2022. Swedish police are leading an investigation into last month's breach of two Baltic Sea telecommunications cables.

Separately, Finnish police are also investigating damage to the Balticconnector gas pipeline connecting Finland and Estonia last year, as well as several telecommunications cables, possibly caused by a ship dragging its anchor.
