Lam Dong: Resolutely handle violations of irrigation works corridors

Vice Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee Le Trong Yen has just directed the Department of Agriculture and Environment, People's Committees of communes, wards and special zones to thoroughly handle violations of the protection corridor of irrigation works.

Encroachment on flood drainage channels is happening in many places.

Accordingly, the provincial People's Committee assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment to preside over and coordinate with the People's Committees of communes, Binh Thuan Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited, and related units to urgently inspect, verify information and clarify the encroachment of flood drainage channels.

In particular, the focus is on the communes of Ham Thuan Nam, Ham Thuan Bac, Ham Kiem, Ham Thuan, Vinh Hao, Phan Son. Thereby, promptly handle strictly according to regulations and report to the Provincial People's Committee before August 20, 2025.

The Provincial People's Committee also assigned the People's Committees of communes, wards and special zones to inspect, review and thoroughly handle violations, land encroachment and illegal construction in the protection corridor of irrigation works in the management area.

In case of serious violations that are not thoroughly handled, causing negative public opinion and being reported by the press, the Chairman of the People's Committee of communes, wards and special zones must be responsible to the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee.

Irrigation canals are obstructed from flowing

According to Binh Thuan Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited ( Lam Dong ), there is still a situation where people encroach on riverbeds, streams, and flood drainage channels after the reservoir's spillway to build tents, shops, build barns for raising livestock and poultry, and plant perennial trees... This has narrowed the flow and hindered the reservoir's ability to drain floods.

Therefore, when there is an emergency situation such as flood discharge or dam failure, it increases the level of flooding in downstream areas, making it difficult to coordinate the organization and implementation of emergency plans.

Previously, the press also reported that many flood drainage channels in Lam Dong province were encroached upon, narrowing the flow and affecting flood drainage.

By 2025, in the Southeast region of Lam Dong province, there will be 40 irrigation reservoirs of all kinds in operation. The total capacity of the reservoirs is 441.33 million m3. The total design capacity is 60,367 ha.
