Rising from hardship

In 1999, after getting married, Ms. Duyen and her husband lived with her husband's family. At that time, her husband worked as a worker, and she bought chickens and ducks from households in the commune and transported them to the Nha Trang area to sell. Without capital, she had to buy on credit from the villagers and only returned to pay after selling. Thanks to her diligence and hard work, her business gradually stabilized. After a period of saving, in 2002, she and her husband bought a small house in My Loi village to live.

In 2009, the couple borrowed a small amount of capital from their brothers to buy a tractor, starting a new direction in their hometown fields. In addition to cultivating 1,500m² of rice fields of their family, Ms. Duyen and her husband also plowed for hire and transported rice for people in the commune and neighboring areas. At that time, there were few machines in the locality, so the work was quite favorable, she had money to pay off the debt and buy a second tractor. Thanks to diligence and hard work, the couple saved up capital and bought an additional 11,000m² of land in Bac village (Nam Ninh Hoa commune) to grow acacia. Later, she switched to growing fruit trees intercropped with short-term crops such as: jackfruit, mango, avocado, star apple, black beans, corn...

Bold mechanization

Realizing that each harvest season, people still have to rent machines from other places at high costs, with the support of the Commune Women's Union to borrow 300 million VND from banks, along with the family's accumulated capital, in 2015, the couple bought a combine harvester for more than 600 million VND to serve the harvest stage for farmers. After mastering the technique, the couple continued to invest in new machines, bought a 7-seat car to expand the service. "Thanks to growing fruit trees, operating plows, harvesters and car services, each year my family earns more than 600 million VND after deducting expenses. Currently, with 3 plows, 3 combine harvesters, my family creates jobs for 12 local workers with an income of 3 - 7.5 million VND/person/month", Ms. Duyen said.

Despite her busy work schedule, Ms. Duyen still actively participates in local women's movements and is an active member of the Happy Family Club and the Intergenerational Self-Help Club. She also regularly helps and advocates for support for those in difficult circumstances in the commune.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phan - Vice President of the Women's Union of Nam Ninh Hoa commune said that in recent times, the union has had many activities to support women in developing their family economy such as: supporting loans, giving means of livelihood, saving movements to help poor women... Since then, many typical examples in economic development have appeared, including Ms. Nguyen Thi Mong Duyen. Not only enriching her family, Ms. Duyen also shares experiences, helps other members to rise up, participate in charitable activities, and contribute to the community.
