The model of planting Bat Do bamboo for bamboo shoots of veteran Ly Quoc Vu (Binh Hoa Dong commune, Moc Hoa district) brings high economic efficiency.
In early 2021, Mr. Vu boldly invested in planting 1,200 Bat Do bamboo trees on an area of 1.7 hectares. After nearly 3 years of care, his bamboo garden has produced commercial bamboo shoots for sale on the market. On average, each Bat Do bamboo clump produces 5-6 bamboo shoots, each shoot weighs 0.5-2kg; the peak harvest time is during the rainy season, from August to November. Every day, he harvests 200-300kg of bamboo shoots, fresh bamboo shoots are sold at prices ranging from 15,000-25,000 VND/kg.
Along with harvesting commercial bamboo shoots, Mr. Vu also breeds bamboo shoots to supply to farmers in the area at a price of 20,000 VND/tree. With the efforts and determination of Uncle Ho's soldiers, on average, each year, Mr. Vu earns an income of 300-500 million VND from the Bat Do bamboo growing model for bamboo shoots.
According to Mr. Vu, the technique of growing Bat Do bamboo for bamboo shoots is not too difficult for farmers. Each hectare can be planted with 550-600 bamboo roots, the initial investment capital is not large, the cost of buying seeds, building dikes, making beds, buying fertilizer is about 25 million VND/ha. Bamboo is only planted once and can be exploited for many years, with an average yield of 20-25 tons/ha; if farmers take care and fertilize diligently, the yield can reach 40 tons/ha.
"This type of tree is not picky about soil, is rarely affected by pests or diseases, and the more sunlight it receives, the greener it becomes, and the investment cost is not much. However, to have high productivity of Bat Do bamboo, it needs to be fertilized continuously, especially after harvests," said Mr. Vu.
It is known that the model of growing Bat Do bamboo for bamboo shoots of Mr. Vu's family is being evaluated by the leaders of Binh Hoa Dong commune and the Standing Committee of the Association of War Veterans of Moc Hoa district as an economic development model that helps reduce poverty effectively, can be replicated, and contributes to helping members of the Association of War Veterans escape poverty sustainably./.
