Making pots for a good income

According to comrade Le Thanh Tai - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Dong Thanh Commune, An Minh District ( Kien Giang ), the cement rolling profession in Thanh Tien Hamlet has been around for over 18 years. Many households have been taught the profession by previous generations, some families have 3 generations of cement rolling. The cement rolling profession helps many households in Thanh Tien Hamlet develop their economy.

To make a complete cement jar, it must go through many steps such as mixing raw materials, applying cement, adding oil, etc. Each worker must clearly understand the steps and be skillful to make a quality product.

With over 15 years of experience in making cement rollers, Mr. Trinh Van Thao, residing in Thanh Tien Hamlet, Dong Thanh Commune, said: “To make two cement rollers, you need about 4 bags of cement, sand and about half a cubic meter of dust. In the process of making cement rollers, the most important thing to pay attention to is to place the bottom of the roller on a flat surface, otherwise the bottom of the roller will easily crack and become unusable.”

Mr. Nguyen Duy Linh, residing in Thanh Tien hamlet, Dong Thanh commune, An Minh district (Kien Giang) pries open the lid of the jar to get the mold after the cement jar has been dried.

Making cement does not require high technical skills, but the worker needs to be diligent and meticulous with the job. According to Mr. Nguyen Duy Linh, residing in Thanh Tien Hamlet, Dong Thanh Commune, his family has many years of experience making cement.

“My father learned the trade from his grandfather and passed it on to me. To this day, he still does this job and opened a cement jar business at home. My father taught me how to make a cement jar, such as how to apply cement to the mold or how to place the bottom of the jar in the right position; I have been doing this job ever since,” said Linh.

Every month, Mr. Linh's cement roller production facility sells about 50-80 units to the market. On average, Mr. Linh's family's cement roller production facility earns a monthly profit of 5-10 million VND. The cement roller production profession also creates jobs for 1-2 local workers.

Currently, the cement rolling profession is facing difficulties due to the increasing price of raw materials and the lack of abundant consumption market. Comrade Le Thanh Tai said: “Currently, Dong Thanh commune continues to pay attention and create conditions for Thanh Tien hamlet to develop the cement rolling profession; striving to develop the cement rolling profession into a craft village, contributing to economic development while preserving the traditional profession. The commune is focusing on implementing a number of solutions such as establishing cooperatives and professional association models to support people in reducing transportation costs, thereby increasing the income of households making cement rolling.”
