(QNO) - The broom making craft village in Duy Trinh commune (Duy Xuyen) has created jobs for many local workers, especially elderly women.
While quickly tying each broom, Mrs. Ha Thi Thu (58 years old, Chiem Son village, Duy Trinh) said that in the current hot weather, she and other women at the workshop started working at 5 am and got to rest earlier than other workers. Mrs. Thu has been involved in the broom making profession for more than 20 years, on average each day she and the workers at the workshop produce about 130 - 150 brooms, earning 150 thousand VND/day.
“For Vietnamese people, hand-made brooms are still commonly used for cleaning in homes and factories, so there is no need to worry about output. The brooms made by the women of Chiem Son village have the advantage of a sturdy handle, a spread-out blade, and a characteristic aroma of brooms. This profession provides jobs for most middle-aged women in the village," Ms. Thu shared.
In Chiem Son village, most of the broom production is on a household scale, taking advantage of free time, people take the brooms home to increase their income. However, when the consumption market is strong, broom making has also become the main source of income for many families.
To make a broom, the worker must not only be quick but also skillful. Each worker can bundle about 50 brooms per day, each broom is paid about 400 - 500 VND.
According to Ms. Thu, although broom making is not hard work, regularly inhaling dust from the brooms can affect your health in the long run. When wrapping the brooms, they must be wrapped tightly and evenly. If they are loose, the broom will fall apart when used.
In a factory area of less than 100 square meters , Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Oanh - owner of the broom making facility in Chiem Son village, filled it with raw materials for making brooms such as bamboo sticks, strings, rattan, reeds, etc.
Ms. Oanh imports the bamboo sticks from Laos, and buys the bamboo sticks from people in mountainous districts such as Dong Giang and Tay Giang. In addition to making bamboo brooms, her facility also makes brooms with plastic handles. The size of each broom depends on the customer's request.
Ms. Oanh said that her facility has 20 workers, they work on a line of stages to form a broom. Wages are calculated based on the number of products, each worker receives about 150 - 200 thousand VND/day.
Every month, this facility supplies the market with more than 10,000 brooms (wholesale price 26,000 VND/broom). The market for brooms is nationwide, but the customers who buy the most are concentrated in Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue provinces.

Brooms in Chiem Son and other villages of Duy Trinh commune are durable, less damaged, and have less falling fibers than those in other areas thanks to the skillful hands and meticulous care of the people here. And more importantly, the broom makers in Duy Trinh keep their reputation with customers for each product they create.
The entire Duy Trinh commune currently has about 60-70 households specializing in making brooms, including more than 10 large-scale establishments, creating stable jobs for hundreds of local workers, mainly women and the elderly, with an average income of 4-6 million VND/month/person.
