According to information from the manufacturer, by the end of the first day of deposit acceptance, the Dongfeng M-Hero M817 model had recorded 9,713 orders, despite the fact that the deposit could be refunded (if there were too many orders). With this number of orders for Dongfeng M-Hero M817, it partly shows the strong attraction of the SUV model with the design of "futuristic hybrid beast" in the domestic market, where more and more consumers prefer electric off-road vehicles.
The M-Hero M817 hybrid gasoline-electric SUV is a product of cooperation between Dongfeng and Huawei, developed based on the platform of its "brother" M-Hero 917 but with a more compact size. The car is equipped with a “range-extender” powertrain that combines a 1.5L turbocharged gasoline engine and two electric motors, providing a total output of up to 912 horsepower and 1,280 Nm of torque. With these parameters, the M817 is capable of accelerating from 0–100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, an impressive figure for a heavy SUV. The vehicle is equipped with a large capacity battery, allowing for a pure electric range of up to 200 km. Fuel consumption in mixed conditions has not yet been announced, but with range-extending technology, the M817 can conquer long journeys without worrying about charging infrastructure.
The highlight of the M-Hero M817 is not only its power but also its appearance. The SUV has an angular, fierce, military design style mixed with futuristic elements, creating a completely different image compared to most SUV models on the market. This design is reminiscent of vehicles such as the Hummer EV or Tank 500 Hi4-T but carries the unique design language of the M-Hero. Another factor that makes the car so attractive is its accessible price. The car starts at 329,900 yuan (equivalent to about 1.2 billion VND) and the highest version is 359,900 yuan (about 1.31 billion VND). Currently, Dongfeng has no plans to distribute the M817 outside of China, especially in the US market. However, information from the company said that this model will have a left-hand drive version, opening up the possibility of exporting to some countries in Asia, Africa and South America in the future.
In the context of pure electric off-road vehicles becoming increasingly popular, especially in developing markets, Dongfeng's investment in producing multiple configurations for the M817 could be a strategic move to expand the influence of the M-Hero brand.
